Today Granny is 83 years young! We had her party yesterday since everyone will be back at work today and both my brothers usually have to work late.

Through the years Granny has always made her own birthday cake or at least a birthday dessert. This year I told her I’d make the cake and she agreed to let me…if I’d use her recipe for birthday cake icing 🙂

I’m not much on birthday cakes. I prefer other recipes, but I have to admit the one I made for Granny turned out pretty good.

I made a yellow cake and frosted it with Granny’s favorite recipe.

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 cups sifted powdered sugar (I don’t use that much)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Cream butter and crisco thoroughly. Mix in vanilla. Gradually add sugar mixing until desired consistency. Add milk and mix well. Adjust thickness with more powdered sugar if needed and whip until light and fluffy.

After I frosted the cake the girls helped me “write” Granny on the cake and decorate it with dots of red, yellow, and green frosting.

Granny had already bought her number candles to go on top. I’m telling you she’s crazy about birthday cakes even if it’s her own!

She lives in San Diego, where I was born and raised (I live in North Carolina now). My Mom taught me to crochet in the summer between my first and second grade, with a size 7 metal crochet hook, and cotton mercerized thread. My first project was a potholder in red with a white scallop edge. Thank you for sharing your children with the world!! They are so lucky to have you as their Mom!!

  19. Happy birthday Granny! Give your momma a hug from me too. Enjoy every day you have with her, because time flies and soon they are gone. I just lost my momma the end of January. She had just had her 90th birthday Nov 21st. I don’t know where it says that we stop needing our parents after we reach a certain age!

  22. Happy Birthday, Granny! You are so fortunate to be 83 years young, living in your own home, and enjoying family and friends. I really like the sweater you are wearing in the picture. It looks warm
    and comfortable for chilly spring mornings.

    I want to try your icing recipe. My mother did a lot like this only she used cocoa for yummy
    chocolate icing.

  43. Happy Birthday Granny
    My Mom passed away at 90 years young, we still miss her so much. What a impact mothers make to the whole family. My Mom always said the mother was the “glue” of the entire family. Dad has been gone since 1997 and Mom 2015. Dad was the “backbone” Mom the “glue” that held it all together. Sure miss them both, I am 74 and still feel the need to talk to Mom for advise or just to chat. So Happy you still have your Mom, I know you all cherish her. God Bless You All.

  55. Happy Birthday Granny and I’m praying God’s best for the year ahead!!! Your just a couple years older than me. Your birthday cake looked beautiful and I am sure it was delicious!
    Tipper, sorry to see Matt looking peaked. I never had allergies until I was in my 20’s and then suffered a lot with spring colds and fall colds until they figured it out. You might try the over the counter non-drowsy decongestant like Claritin and the nasal spray too. Thank the Lord those do work for me. It is hard to sleep when you can’t breathe good.

  60. I meant to send Dear Granny a birthday card, but I swear I thought it was in APRIL. I thought of her birthday last week and decided it was too early yet to send a card. The cake looks just about as sweet as Granny’s sweet self! I must say she looks really great and I’m giving her an outstanding report concerning her health based on her good looks and clear mind!   71. Aww happy birthday to Granny! I have very much enjoyed watching your videos of her. She and my Grampa are the same age, he just turned 83 on the 25th. We are so blessed to still be celebrating birthdays with him. He’s had several strokes over the years, but God is so good! He’s frail now, but still has all his wits about him, and still drives! My Gram will be 85 this year and is in amazingly good health. They are such a blessing to all of us! Enjoy these days, they are precious!
