Anna Belle Cook 1905-1992
Today’s post contains the second part of Taylor’s interview with Francis Cook who is Anna Belle’s second youngest son and Taylor’s grandfather.
I’m not sure Taylor realizes the importance of her thesis work. It certainly secured her teaching credentials, but it also documented important details about the Cook family and friends, Brasstown, and the mountains of southern Appalachia. I’m thankful for the dedication and time Taylor used to preserve the amazing legacy of Anna Belle Cook.

I’m really enjoying listening to Taylor’s recordings. Just have to wait till things are settled down of a night to have enough time to pay attention. I’ve already learned more listening to this one interview with a good ole mtn man than I have in probably 5 yrs cumulatively elsewhere lol
Hi Tipper and Acorns. People never think about the wealth of information and history that comes from the everyday conversation with their elders. Churches ought to seek out their elder members and make extensive recordings. Every community ought to make a photo record of everyone and every building. We are losing so much every day. The “Greatest Generation” is almost gone, as are their children. I am in the generation after them and we are dropping like flies. The knowledge of living without modern convivences will almost be lost after us. I keep everyone here and up Wilson Holler in my prayers. I thank you all for remembering me, my son Ed and my sister Nancy in your prayers. Lots of Praise to report. Ed had his heart loop recorder implanted Friday morning and is doing good. Nancy had what is we hope to be her final surgery on Friday and may get to come back home next Friday. She is exceeding all the doctors’ expectations for the plates, pins, muscle and skin grafts. I’m still able to care for Ed. Every day is a struggle for us all and a blessing to live in GOD’s service. We are here to live by HIS Commandments and to Praise Him. May we all live our lives thru HIS will. I love y’all.
So far Granny Bell is the “mother-in-law of a niece of the wife of the brother-in-law of my 2nd cousin 2x removed”. Not a close relationship but still kin. Also, I just got started.
Was Taylor named that because it was her mother’s maiden name?
Papaw her grandmother Hazel was a Taylor I think that’s where the name came from. The other names you asked about were correct 🙂 So glad you found a connection I knew you would!
My grandfather was James Hamilton Cook. He was Born in Graham County, NC in 1896. His father was James Allferd Cook. I don’t know if they were related or not. My Grand mothers were Coopers and Hoopers from Graham County. My Dad’s father was from Virginia.
I think the name is James Alfred Cook if he died on 4 Jul 1940 and is buried at Old Mother Cemetery. Is James Hamilton Cook buried at Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincoln County? Did he marry Alice Cooper? Was her mother Sarah? Did James Hamilton Cook have daughters Christine, Emogene and Betty Sue?
