Sun shining behind clouds

I always find great solace in the songs Pap and Paul sung over the years. Yesterday I got an old hymn they did on my mind and it’s still running around in my head today. The name of it is “What Can Jesus Do?”

When I was a girl we sung the song at church. It has uplifting lyrics and a peppy tune that sort of intensifies or builds as it goes along. I always felt like it was uniting the whole church in hope when we sung it.

What can Jesus do with a heart that’s steeped with sin
What can he do with no hope of life within
Lift up the fallen man out of the sinking sand
Through Calvary’s saving plan
That’s what he can do

What can he do for you though helpless sad and blue
He’ll do what other powers can never do
Hear ever time you pray drive all the clouds away
Turn darkest night to day
That’s what he can do

What can Jesus do with a heavy laden soul
What can he do with sorrow yet untold
Give to your heart a song till all your burden is gone
Your sorrow will have flown

What can he do for you though helpless sad and blue
He’ll do what other powers can never do
Hear ever time you pray drive all the clouds away
Turn darkest night to day
That’s what he can do

What can Jesus do when the chilling hand of death
Lays hold on you and you draw your final breath
His love will still provide guide safely ore the tide
To Canaan’s happy side
That’s what he can do

What can he do for you though helpless sad and blue
He’ll do what other powers can never do
Hear ever time you pray drive all the clouds away
Turn darkest night to day
That’s what he can do

I hope you enjoyed Paul and Pap’s lovely harmony and the uplifting words.

  1. May God continue to wrap his loving arms around you all at this saddest of times. RIP Miss Cindy

  2. Bless you all. Some time ago I attended a funeral and a quartet of family and friends sang this song.
It is unique in that a woman wrote the words, not as a song, but as her own eulogy. Sometime the words were given to a member of the bluegrass group Blue Highway . They put a melody to it and they worked it up into a song that they have sung at nearly every show for over 20 years now. After the funeral that day, I downloaded the song from iTunes as soon as I got in my truck. I then listened to it on repeat for I don’t know how long on the 3 hour drive back to SE KY. May the Lord provide comfort to your family during this hard time.

  6. These words from “Take my hand, precious Lord” came to my mind about our dear Miss Cindy. As age and illness grips us, we sometimes yearn for home. “Precious Lord, take my hand. Lead me on, let me stand. I am tired, I am weak, I am worn. Through the storm, through the night, lead me on toward the light. Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home.” Be strong for each other, and know that your tears are a natural healer. God bless and comfort all of you is my prayer.

  7. Tipper and family,
I know your hearts are hurting and mine hurts for you; especially for Matt. I just want to add my voice to the many who are praying for you at this sad time; wishing you all the very best.

  8. Wow, what a treasure and a blessing to have a library full of videos and all the oral histories you do. Such a beautiful song. Not only is it an uplifting reminder of Gods grace but you have a cherished piece of history right there.

The night before my grandfather passed, he read his favorite excerpts to us from one of his favorites about Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier. Calm and steady was his voice in his 90’s, and thankfully my sister recorded it. Keep doing what you do.

  9. What a beautiful & perfect song for today! I have never heard that song but will copy the lyrics & look at it often as it is a good reminder of what God can & will do for us during our life here on earth. Prayers & hugs to you & your family & for strength in the days to come. Hugs!

  10. There is another song about those dark cloud days that tells you that you can pray them away, Pray the Clouds Away. We have just come through a week of dark clouds, thunder and lightening and rain. More than once I thought to pray it away then thought God has his purposes beyond our understanding.

This morning I stepped out into sunshine and a cloudless sky. I know that your dark clouds will not go away so easy but put your trust in Him who brought you here to bring you out.

I also heard Jar Flies singing (if you can call the noise they make singing). They have probably been waiting all week for the dark clouds to roll away so they can start their chorus.

  11. Such a wonderful beautiful song and even better the beautiful voices singing it. How wonderful to have these uplifting videos of these lovely hymns sung by your loved ones. 14. Your family is so blessed to have that wonderful soul satisfying music around so often. Your fathers voice is soooo beautiful and your brother so talented and all I can think is you have peace in the valley when praising God. King David couldn’t have ordered a better form of praise!

  15. Thanks Tipper, for this encouragement, and Miss Cindy’s and y’alls trust and belief in our Jesus.

  16. Tipper, watching that video I got to grinning looking at Paul and Corey. I thought to myself how much they look like “mini me’s” of Pap Wilson! I also like the wood paneling and cabinets in that kitchen- like it matters, right? I have paneling in my informal living room (which nobody likes, but me cause it’s a blast from the past and I think of daddy putting it up all proud of “hisself”) and Id like to think it’s “my” Biltmore billiards room (or as close as a poor hillbilly can get.) I aim to keep my paneling btw. I think it’s PURTY! Lol. There ain’t nothing Jesus can’t do and this song is beautifully performed as well as the meaningful lyrics. May God bless you all and “them”Wilsons in the holler!

  17. It has been a long time since I heard this song. Like so many of the old time hymns, the words are so truthful. Last night, I listened for more than a hour to Pap, Paul and the other members singing these old gospel hymns on you tube, some of them I kept playing over and over. Still praying for all of you.

  21. Without Jesus, my life would be empty and meaningless. He is my Rock, my Strength. He fills my days with wonder and awe. He carries me through the worst of times, and makes the best of times even more glorious.
