Yesterday I continued my decluttering and organizing work. I started bright and early in the dangerous room. It took me all day to finish going through the room. It feels so good to have it completed.
The dangerous room is a bedroom in our house. When the girls were little they shared a room and the guest room housed our office, a bed, and a lot of other things. To say it was not baby proofed is an understatement.
We had one of those doorknob things on the door so the girls couldn’t go in, but of course they always wanted to especially as they got a little older. I don’t recall if it was The Deer Hunter or me who started telling them it was a dangerous room and they couldn’t play inside it.
When they were a little older I gave in to their pleas one day. One of them plugged the iron up and set it in the carpet where it left a perfect iron shaped mark in the rug. That little stunt banned them for a good long time. Their daddy said I shouldn’t have trusted the little ankle biters in the first place 🙂
As time went by we all started calling it the dangerous room. Even when the girls were old enough to go into the room for this or that any time they wanted to, we continued to call it the dangerous room.
There were many times one or the other girl begged to make the dangerous room her bedroom because she just couldn’t bear her sister one more day 🙂 I’d always say “Of course you can move into the dangerous room, but first you have to sleep in there one night to show me you are serious.” Neither girl could ever sleep without her sister. By the time bedtime arrived the fight had been forgotten.
But when Chatter was 16 she decided she really did want her own room. It took a while, but we moved everything out of the room, including a piano, and from that time on it became Corie’s room instead of the dangerous room.
Once she was married and gone we seamlessly went back to calling it the dangerous room. It was strange. There was no discussion or comment about it, the dangerous room moniker just returned overnight once the room had been vacated.
These days it’s back to being an office of sorts, a catch all, and a shipping area for the things we sell. From Chitter’s jewelry to cookbooks, cds, and mugs everything is packaged in the room before being shipped out.
One of my favorite pieces in the room is the old shelf you see in the photo. It was Chatter’s but she decided to leave it. I’m glad she did.
Papaw Tony and The Deer Hunter were working in an old house in Canton. The shelf was in the basement and was going to be thrown away. The Deer Hunter knew we would want it so he brought it home. I like the usefulness of it, but also the detail of the curved dividers. I like thinking about who made it too. I wonder if they made it for their wife or their daughter or their son or themselves 🙂
A few folks have emailed me about the comments not showing up on the blog. There seems to be two issues going on. One is, on a day like yesterday I don’t have time to publish them until late in the day so it may look like your comment didn’t go through but it actually did. The reason I have them set to publish after moderation is to prevent spam, mean tirades, and political posts from distracting from the purpose of the blog.
The other issue seems to be a technical problem. I did some modifications that helped one person who was having trouble seeing all of the comments, but that problem may still be going on for you. If it is I apologize for the trouble.
A few folks who are new to the blog have asked how to leave a comment.
To access the comment form you need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the comments. If you don’t see the form at the bottom please let me know, that would be another technical issue.
If you’ve been having issues with the comments but haven’t already let me know, please send me an email (blindpigandtheacorn@gmail.com) and I’ll try to figure out what is going on.

Hi Miss Tipper, I always dream of purging each room in my house, but then I almost always get sidetracked by something, I think I want to throw away, donate or keep myself, which happens more than I want to say. LOL. It gets harder every time, my goodness, I can always figure out a reason not to pitch something out. I admire and envy anyone who can get it done, like you do. Your stamina is an amazing thing to watch and I wish I had it again, like days long past. My old mind and body seems to have lost all that energy. Y’all have a great weekend and know we truly enjoy your post with Matt and all the stories y’all have to tell. God bless everyone, hope everyone is doing well. J.
Oh Tipper…I need to clean out rooms and drawers and closets so badly. I look around and feel the need to purge. I know I will feel so much better when I do it. My worst fault is saving clothes that I want to wear, but don’t fit…and some of them have never fit…I just wish they did! I have decided that I just need to be brave and give away everything that I can’t wear right now. Then if I ever do get skinny…I can have fun buying new ones. Wish me luck…I am gonna start tomorrow. Btw..your shelves in the dangerous room look awesome and so neat and tidy.
Tipper, I sure do like your room and expecially those shelves. I’d like to have a set of them. Wall space is wasted space so many times for me. I do have some things on the walls too though. I’m in the process of organizing my art room which is a bedroom in my home. Boy! At all the things I’ve accumulated. I’m a decorative artist and that means I can paint on just about anything if it stays still long enough! LOL! I’m really enjoying finding some long forgotton surfaces to paint and craft on. I just love being creative. Of course I know the Great Creator/Artist and I like to think that it is pleasing when I try to use my creative abilities. I’ve enjoyed seeing your folk art angels. I hope you still paint sometimes. Please show them to us when you do. Give Granny a great big hug for me. I’ll try to send her a “purty” when I get one ready for her. Love and hugs, Barbara
Loved this memory! What a great story!❤️
Shoot, after 6 of us living in a small double wide mobile home for many years and now two men, my home would be a disaster. The easiest way to clean it up would be to stick a match to it! A burglar would think something else had already been there! But it provides me with everything I need in the way of a home and is full of many happy, joyful memories of my family and is fully paid for. I dearly love a breakfast of country ham, red eye gravy, grits, eggs, a good biscuit and a cup or two of plain grocery store coffee.
I loved the story about the ankle biters and the dangerous room . . . so cute! I like to dabble in arts and crafts, too, but I live in a condo and am very limited on space, so my guest bedroom has become the catch-all for my various interests. I call it “my Art Studio,” but it really should be “the Dangerous Room” too. I have a small bed in there and seem to have some kind of project going on in every corner. I’m currently taking a watercolor class, so my kitchen table is fast becoming another “dangerous room.” 🙂 We do what we have to do! LOL!
I really like the shelf, and everything looks so nice and neat. Here at home, I also have been decluttering, and it sure makes me feel good to see the finished product. I saved the best (worst) for last. I have a kitchen drawer that has everything tossed in it. We probably all have one like that. That is going to be a challenge. I could call it the dangerous drawer, LOL.
Wow, you are really organized! I love that shelf that you use. It looks very substantial and strong enough to hold just about anything. I could use something like that in my office. Glad you got the room to where you like it.
Tipper, I’m relieved to know others aren’t seeing all the comments. Until today, I assumed I was the only one and that the glitch was in my low-end laptop alone. Thanks!
I must admit my feelings were a little hurt when I could see my comment had not been posted. I just thought that the original readers of your blog were just a really tight knit group and I was considered an outsider.
I love the shelves!
I really like that shelf! How nice of Matt to save it for you!
it does feel good to get things like that accomplished (clean outs and organization) but your energy still amazes me cause you are able to go buck trees and other outside work on top of the inside organizational clean outs you are doing….I use to be able to work like you, and frankly I miss that ability
A few rooms in my house could be considered dangerous. I started going through my closet room in early fall, only to make a bigger mess. The piles added up quickly, with each stack having its destination marked in my head. The room does not have heat or air, so I had no idea it would get too cold to finish decluttering until spring—at least, that’s my excuse. The Christmas room upstairs went from dangerous to disastrous.
My Daddy loved, loved Red Eye Gravy and my Grandmother made it with coffee too:) Your breakfast sure looked delicious! And my Son gave me some gee a year ago and I use it for popcorn.
When I watched the video on Utube, I always click on the hand but this time it would not let me do that it said sign in. I don’t know what they are talking about because I’m subscribed and have been for many years.
Dee-thank you! YouTube has weird glitches sometimes. Hopefully that one will be fixed the next time you are using it. We appreciate you watching!!
Dee, That has happened to me before and it is usually because I do not have my email open ( in another tab). Out email address and YouTube are connected and that is how we are recognized to be able to comment, I think; they do not allow anonymous commenters(?) . I can usually find a circle at the top right of the YT screen and click on that and it has my account info. If I do not have my email open in another tab that account info circle will not be there. I hope that helps.
I like the shelf and also the term “ankle bitters.”
I swear, the things we get away with when our kids are little. I had five, and at any given time one of them had some kind of malady or another. Usually contrived. So, since none of them could read I bought a bottle of Tums. I would tell them, is it a pink pain or is it white? And I’d always follow that up with a serious statement about those colors and their intensity. Miraculously, Tums solved tummy aches, headaches, muscle aches, you name it. One day, my youngest was looking at the label and said, “Hey, this isn’t made for headaches.” And that was the end of Tums.
What a great idea, Pete! Gave me a chuckle.
I have a dangerous Under The House in a dugout space I made for “dirty” storage. And then there is The Attic which was never intended to be used. But before we came, somebody made a funny little door that has a hinged corner that must fold down to let the door swing. Oh, and we have to crawl through the closet to get to the door. There are things in The Attic that have been there 30+ years. Some of it is good stuff. I just don’t remember what all it is.
I like the idea of a dangerous room mainly because it may deter a child from entering and allow parents to have a space for overflow and junk that could come in handy at some point. I liked the iron imprint in carpet that led to a ban and the fact Corie had her own teen room at one time. I think calling a room dangerous may indeed entice little boys to go in there by the name alone. I love your little shelves and they caught my eye before I read a word. Now maybe you can have the UPS shipping room we all desire. I’d say Ira will be laying claim on the dangerous room sooner than you think. I’ve threatened Murr with the creation of a BADBOY room or shed when we are on the fritz. At this point, I think he would go for it just to get alone with his thoughts and away from me… I know it’s hard to believe since I’m a wallflower of pleasantry. lol. now about comments and whatever else-it’s your blog and your baby so to speak. Rock it however you choose as we got no dog in the race you see. No feelers hurt or tough noogies on my part. Sometimes i get spouting off to my own jargon. Overlook my ignorance please. I respect you and learn quite a bit from you, not to mention seeing things or hearing things uniquely yours that are a treat! Take care and May the Good Lord bless and keep us while forgiving us and being good and merciful to us every moment of every day! It’s all good!
I like the way you moderate your comments now. It prevents it becoming a chatroom.
Loved the story of tje dangerous room. About 6 months before retirement, I started converting, what I called the wicker room (because most of the furniture is white wicker), into sort of a craft and office for me. I put in a white day bed and a white convertible craft table that folds into a pretty table in case I have visitors. I also called it the girly room because the walls are painted peach.
That is a nice shelf. I like the design of it with the dividers. That could be quite useful for organizing.
Love the story about the dangerous room and the girls. The shelf is beautiful and I am glad the Deer Hunter saved it from being trashed. It is a very beautiful and functional treasure.
That makes me wonder if/when my girls will ever want their own rooms. They’re 2 years apart and my older daughter has just this school year had a few church youth outings that have her out passed bedtime. Her little sister always cries for a few minutes when she has to go to bed alone with her favorite companion in the room. Of course we don’t have extra space so if they do want their own room it’s too bad
That is a very useful shelf. I to like the design. You have to keep those babies safe. We are already talking about how to put things away for our great grandchildren who will be visiting for a month in April. Our grandson and his wife are in the military in Hawaii. We haven’t seen them in over a year. Seems like most people have a room or drawers like that. lol
My Aunt had a “Beautiful Room ” It was a small bedroom that she turned into a pantry/sewing room/ironing room/walk-in closet. The first time she sent her young Grandson onto the room for something, he came out exclaiming ” Oh Granny!!!…that’s a beautiful room!!” So after that it became THE beautiful room forever. I think most all in our family now have a room we have christened the Beautiful Room.
Ankle Bitters….I had to laugh as I have not heard that phrase in a long time. You organizational skills work real good for you as I see. I keep moving stuff from one side of the room to the other as I use a bedroom in our home for office, sewing room, exercise room, changing room, and on and on. Prayers for sure for Granny and God’s Blessing on your growing family.
