Celebrating Southern Appalachian Food written by Jim Casada & Tipper Pressley

Bitter cold is moving into Brasstown so it’s a perfect time for a cup of Granny’s hot chocolate.

On November 15, 2025 from 11:00 am till 2:00 pm I will be at the Little Light Christian Books and Gifts store in Granite Falls, NC (3 N Main Street) signing cookbooks. The bookstore will have the books available for purchase. You can also buy the cookbook here.

No matter how careful the shippers and packers are there are always a couple of books that arrive with bent covers or some other minor flaw when I receive a new shipment. And then there’s the ones I mess up by writing the wrong name or making some other typo as I inscribe them for someone who has purchased a book.

Today’s Thankful November giveaway is a slightly damaged but new copy of Celebrating Southern Appalachian Food written by Jim Casada and Tipper Pressley. To be entered in the giveaway leave a comment on this post. Giveaway ends November 14, 2025. There will be three winners for this giveaway.

Be sure to drop back by tomorrow. I will announce the first of the winners for this year.

  1. I love hot chocolate! And being “Granny’s” Hot Chocolate makes it extra special. I would really like to add your cookbook to my collection. I have made a few of the things on your vlog from the cookbook and have really liked them.

  2. Good Morning from East Texas! I love hot cocoa and I would love to win a copy of your cookbook! Have a blessed week!

  3. God post. Every morning I make Diane coffee because I love coffee and she says I make it better. I don’t. But after making her a cup of her favorite blueberry flavored coffee I must add the following for that first cup: one drop if orange oil, one small dash of hydrating water, A dash of cinnamon, and a tiny bit of coconut oil. I jokingly ask her how she can taste the blueberry flavor with all the other stuff in it. She just says thank you for the coffee.
Granny’s hot chocolate reminds me of the winter nights my brother and I would go ice skating at the Lion’s Club skating rink down the street from our hone. One summer the Lion’s Club wanted to build something for the youth in our town so they bought some mash land nd cleared all the grass and cat tails off of it. Then they made a hockey size skating rink to be used in the winter. When the temperatures dropped below freezing and would stat that way for the rest of the winter the Lion’s Club would flood that area with water and every week or so come back and flood it again to make sure the ice was smooth.
Best part of the skating was taking a break in the unheated hut the club built for people to jeep their boots. In that hut they also had someone selling hot chocolate. The smell was unbelievable. There is nothing like hot chocolate on a cold night. Continue to pray for Granny and your entire family. Have a blessed day.

  4. I love hot chocolate, especially this time of the year. There’s no snow here in LA, but it’s plenty cold for me! 40s right now, supposed to be around 37 in the morning.

  5. Sounds good, however I have to ask if that is enough sugar and if you make yours this way?
    Thank Granny for sharing!!

  6. The best part of playing in the snow was coming into the warm house and having homemade hot chocolate waiting on us! My granny made, my mom made it and so do I!

  7. No wonder I became a lifelong fan of chocolate. Homemade hot chocolate warmed my bones and my belly on cold winter mornings like little else could or did. That same tin of Hershey’s cocoa yielded mouthwatering chocolate pies, and even tiny ones just for me, made in a toy pie tin, topped with meringue just like their mama ones. Hot cocoa are surely a part of cozy and comfy homespun memories from my youth.

  8. I live in Blairsville, right near you, and it’s mighty cold. It’s 25° now on my back porch although my phone says it 30°. I’m staying warm with my Sassy cat in my lap and sipping hot chocolate.

  9. The winter that I was in sixth grade, it had snowed and one of the boys from my class came over to sled with me. The street that formed a corner with the street I lived on, had been paved some months back and had just enough slope to be fun. After we had sufficiently frozen our noses and our toes, we went into the house to rest and thaw. Momma surprised us by bringing each of us a mug of homemade hot chocolate. No other hot cocoa has ever tasted quite so delicious! I am grateful for a wonderful life!!! Thank you for reminding me!

  10. An Aunt of mine makes hot chocolate like that. As a kid, I loved having her warm, delicious treat while staying at her house. I still love it.

  11. Funny you should post this, we made hot chocolate last night using a package of instant hot cocoa mix, milk, and lots of chocolate syrup. It hit the spot. The recipe you posted is the same as my grandmother’s.

  12. Sounds great, I will have to try it. Granny ‘Wilson’s famous Hot Chocolate Mix! I wonder how many pots she has made over the years. It’s finally cold enough here in Oklahoma to enjoy it.
    As always, praying for Granny.

  13. Tipper first thing I do every day is read your post. They bring such comfort to me. I love watching you when you are making a recipe and I try to copy the recipe down. However, I am 85 years old and can’t do much cooking anymore, But I would love to have your cookbook for the recipes and the stories, and I am sure some of them go back to when I was a child, such as drinking water from a gourd at the well, or sweeping the yard with brush brooms. Keep up the good work and I will continue to enjoy your shows.

    1. Edith, I remember my grandparents brush brooms, they were not only used to sweep the yard but to help straighten out unruly grandchildren! Granddaddy never had inside plumbing or a pump in his well, the water had to be drawn up with a windless. There is no water I think any better than a cold bucket drawn up from the bottom of a well on a hot summer day. We didn’t drink out of a gourd but a metal dipper.

  14. It is cold and windy here in Northern Illinois, the winds are just howling and even sitting in my living room, it sounds like I am outside. Your suggestion for the cup of Granny’s Hot Cocoa will surely his the spot, so I am off to make myself some!

    Enjoy your day!

  15. Hot chocolate is very important to me lol. Another way to do it is to put chocolate chips in your mug with just a little milk and heat in microwave (or heat milk separately and pour a little in, just enough to cover the chocolate), let them melt and stir with a small silicone spatula, then add rest of milk.

  16. I will definitely try Granny’s Hot Chocolate recipe. Lately I have been adding hot chocolate mix to whole milk and heating it up on the stove in a spouted saucepan—my husband and I really enjoy this mixture with the double richness from the powdered milk with the whole milk from the fridge warmed up on the stove!!!

  17. My cousin and I plan to come to your book signing , and I plan to buy a copy for her and me. We live about 35 minutes away from Granite Falls, and we look forward to meeting both you and Matt. It’s cold here in the foothills this morning, and a cup of Granny’s chocolate sounds good. I hope all the folks of Wilson’s Hollow have a blessed week. Prayers are being sent for all, especially for Granny.

  18. 26° here this morning, with a little snow! I need that cookbook…so I can bake something warm and yummy! Have a wonderful week, everyone!!

  19. Sounds delicious and warming. 32 here this morning with wind chill of 23 in NE Cherokee County GA. Tonight is our first hard freeze, wind chill will be about 15 Tuesday morning.

  20. Even though I live in the Southwest, hot cocoa sounds good. Out here anything below freezing causes a panic. One time, in January, we got down to 18 degrees.

  21. I would love to have a copy of your cookbook, it would remind me of my Grandmothers cooking. Tonight’s weather here in Central Florida will remind me of growing up in the Appalachian foothills.

  22. It’s snowing lightly here in East TN. Definitely cold and dropping by the hour. I love the first couple snows! Everyone be safe today and indulge in some hot cocoa.

  23. Here in Upstate New York, we had a full week of strong wind…it blew all the beautiful leaves off the trees — ALL OF them! — before their time! I think that the next two days were all of our Indian Summer, cuz when I pulled the blind up this morning it was a WHITE-“reality”! …my jaw dropped, as the blind raised! [Someone called on the phone just a couple minutes “after” and said she wanted “to hear (my) voice”, so I began singing “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” (what my Mom used to sing, to announce the 1st snow)!]
What perfect timing, that I was headed to check my overnight email and opened your sharing of Granny’s hot chocolate! …”Perfect”! I WILL look forward to a mug of this warm chocolaty-ness when I get back from the store!
[Tipper, just like Randy said above, receiving your cookbook with a less-than-perfect (or even a”FAR LESS-than-perfect”) cover wouldn’t be a disappointment at all — I think your sharing those (as you described them with “mistakes”, or “damage”) is sweet and *generous! …and “Happy cooking!”, to whomEVER is blessed to receive one!

  24. Very cold here in western NC, with the wind chill and a skiff of snow. Granny’s hot chocolate sounds pretty good right now! Think I’ll give it a try.

  25. It’s cold and snowy in Wisconsin today! We got 9 inches of snow last night and spent most of the morning shoveling. It was very wet and heavy!! I need a cup of yummy hot chocolate.

    1. Bonnie, where in WI are you located to have gotten that kind of snow? 🙂 We just got flurries. My daughter described it colorfully by saying it was “just a dusting of powdered sugar.” 🙂

  26. Thank you for this simple and wonderful homemade hot chocolate recipe, Tipper. I will be making it today for my girls as it’s bitter cold here in Western WI. We had our first snow flurries off and on all day yesterday. Won’t be long before our entire world is white. Hope all of the BPA readers have a wonderful and blessed day!

  27. When I read the hot chocolate recipe I went straight and made myself a cup. It is delicious!! I agree with Sadie……I didn’t need another reason to eat chocolate, but you made me do it Tipper….hahaha. Randy, I also buy a lot of used books so an imperfect copy is okay for me. My family love the blog and videos and we love seeing the love between Matt and Tipper. We don’t miss not even one. We loved Matt and the ladies!! Tipper you should remind him of Natasha, his trainer. Hahaha. Love and prayers to every one of you, especially Granny. We pray for all of us every day.

  28. We’ve been experiencing chilly temperatures for a bit now (central Alberta), but I know it’ll get much worse very soon! That is how we made hot cocoa also and I prefer it over the packaged hot chocolate. I find it far too sweet. I have your cookbook and have made several recipes from it and have enjoyed them all. I love the stories that you and Jim have inserted, anyone winning your cookbook will be lucky!

  29. Woke up to 26 degrees here in Missouri
Way too soon for that cold !! Definitely hot cocoa weather!! Have a safe week Acorns

  30. Good morning Tipper, Hope your book signing goes well. Growing up we never had the privilege of a good cup of hot chocolate, but momma would make chocolate gravy and chocolate pies on special occasions. It was a bit of heaven. God bless. Hope granny is warm and well.

  31. Love a cup of hot cocoa on a cold evening. I make it just this way on a stove top. as a matter of fact, did some for hubby and I last night. Hearing about how you and your do life is fun!

  32. Going to get cold in Connecticut too. Will have to make a cup of hot chocolate. Nice to warm your hands on a mug. Blessings to Granny! And the rest of you too!

  33. Thank you for sharing Granny’s hot chocolate recipe. I rarely make hot chocolate because every recipe I’ve tried has too much cocoa for my taste. As the story of the three bears goes, Granny’s recipe is “just right”! Your cookbook giveaway is always welcomed by all. Thank you, Tipper!

  34. We have a dusting of snow here and windchill is single digit, 7 degrees. Everynight we check YouTube to see if you have a new posting. Thanks for brightening our day with your podcast.

  35. I like a big cup of hot chocolate on a cold morning. I even take a thermos of it to my deer blind on a cold morning like today

  36. Tipper I love seeing you cook and hearing where you got some of the recipes. I would love a cookbook. I wish I could go to this book signing.

  37. Got down to 28 degrees here in southern Illinois. But we have had a really beautiful fall. Have fun on your trip to the booksigning.

  38. i just want to encourage you to keep writing! You will probably never know how many people you have positively impacted with your warmth and humor. Thanks so much! God bless!

  39. i just want to encourage you to keep writing! You will probably never know how many people you have positively impacted with your warmth and humor. Thanks so much! God bless!

  40. Hi Tipper!
I have my Grandmaw Hattie’s old cookbook and I love and cherish her recipes! Add my name to the drawing for the cookbook! Thank you! Will make a cup of hot chocolate today!

  41. A cup of hot cocoa during the colder months was a regular drink growing up – we had some pretty bitter winters that chilled one right to the bone quickly – and sometimes if we had them, there would be a marshmallow or two floating on top. May the book signing be a time of meeting many new, and old-time friends. Journey mercies as you travel to and from.

  42. Love the hot chocolate recipe and all your food stories. Hope Granny is doing good. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

  43. the cookbook would be a great early Christmas gift . Love all the great content and seeing comments. Blessings to all.

  44. I will have to try this recipe. I used to make it for my girls with Hershey’s syrup and milk. We are supposed to see some snow tonight in Richmond, Virginia, but there will be little accumulation.

  45. Granny’s hot chocolate is exactly how my mama used to make it too! Nothing better. Tom and I are in TN this week – planning to do a little genealogy work around Del Rio TN and Hot Springs, NC – but now they are predicting a little winter storm … hoping the warm up on Wednesday allows us to do a little traipsing around. Prayers for Granny and thank you Tipper for all you do.

  46. From reading the comments, I see that this cold spell is pretty much nationwide. It’s certainly turned cold in Kansas. Temps are to rise again this week, though. I’m content to stay inside & read on these cold days.

  47. Today is definitely a day for hot chocolate. High forecast to be about 50. I live about 50 miles south east of Charlotte. If nothing happens, my daughter an I plan to in Granite Falls Saturday. We are very excited to meet you and Matt!

  48. Snowing and cold here in West Virginia. Forecast indicates 4-8 inches!!! Granny’s Hot Chocolate would be perfect right now

  49. Hot chocolate sounds perfect on this cold morning! It was 21 degrees at our house! Thank you for the opportunity to win your cookbook!

  50. For an extra holiday treat, I add a stick of peppermint candy….not the hard kind, but the sugar sticks. I think it is called Bob’s …maybe. Ummm …so good. I keep those boxes of peppermint sticks. Our Ingles grocery keeps them in stock year round. I add them to my bedtime herbal tea at night….just a touch of sweetness. When I was small, oranges weren’t as available year round as they are today, but we always had them at Christmas. My parents would roll the orange on the table to help release the juices, then cut a hole in it and place the peppermint stick in the hole. I would then use it as a straw and suck the orange juice up through the peppermint stick. Sweet, sticky memories. The best kind.

  51. Nothing better than hot chocolate, hot cider or Russian tea to warm your inner self!!
I forgot to mention coffee too!

  52. I have always loved hot chocolate and used the recipe on the back of the Hershey Cocoa can. As a teenager I made cocoa and toast for my breakfast before school. Not a very healthy one but it’s what I wanted. I was starved by the time lunch came around at our school cafeteria. Later, I enjoyed hot chocolate with marshmallows and still enjoy a chocolatey cup once in a while. It was 35 degrees here in Va this morning at 7 and is supposed to only go up to upper 40s. A perfect time to have a cup of hot chocolate.

  53. I would love a copy of your cookbook. Obviously, many others would also, judging by the number off people who have already replied!

  54. Your cookbook is outstanding! I won mine from you last year so don’t put me in the drawing this year.
This is hot chocolate weather. I had my first cup last night. We are in the low 40’s today. Prayers for Granny from Texas!

  55. We’ll soon be moving from South Florida where it’s so hot and humid, to North Florida near the Georgia line where it’s so much cooler, and we’ll actually have some pretty cold days. Being originally from New England, I’m really looking forward to much cooler weather. And I can’t wait to try some of that hot chocolate on our first cold morning!

  56. Hot chocolate reminds me of years gone by when a friend and I would take our four girls sledding on a big hill up the road. Those trips always ended with us coming to my house, warming up by the woodstove, and drinking hot chocolate. Granny’s recipe is so much better than the pre-mixed packets I used to buy.

  57. I’m a relatively new reader of your blog and watcher of your YouTube channel. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know your family and life in Appalachia.

  58. It sure got chilly last evening! We are over here in Blue Ridge, GA and I’m sure I saw a couple of snow flakes this morning!

  59. I love your videos . Finding your channel has sure brought happiness in my life since the death of my husband. Thank you for sharing.

  60. Well Fl doesn’t usually get that cold but we are expecting 30-40 degrees this Tuesday and Wednesday. I’ll have to make myself some of Granny’s hot chocolate.
Your recipes remind me of my momma and grandma’s cooking. I wished I had written down some of theirs over the years. Would love to have a copy of your cookbook. Y’all stay warm and have a blessed week.

    1. 45° here in eastern North Carolina and I’m on the porch with my coffee. I love to do this every morning. The cold air is so invigorating and feels good when I breathe it in. of course! I’m pretty sure I look silly since I’m all bundled up and I have a heating blanket on the dog just so he’ll stay out here with me. Fixing to start on that hot chocolate.

  61. Bitter cold has arrived in Central KY! I am going to try Granny’s hot chocolate recipe for a warm treat today. Thanks for all you share, Tipper!

  62. Here in the TN Valley it’s quite cold this morning hovering at 28 degrees right now, I imagine it’s really frigid in your neck of the woods. I love cocoa and will try Granny’s mix, sending positive energy her and your way. Stay safe strong and warm.

  63. Oh my goodness, it certainly is a good day for hot chocolate! It is 28 degrees with a feel like temperature of 18 here in my part of WV. The trees and ground are covered with a light dusting of snow this morning with a possibility of several inches and strong wind gusts today.

My mama always made us hot chocolate (or hot cocoa, as she calls it) just like Granny…except she always used canned (evaporated) milk and mixed it half and half with water. I have a funny memory of my dad making us hot cocoa one cold January morning. He decided it would be yummy over Cheerios for breakfast. I remember having soggy chocolate Cheerios. LOL My mama was in the hospital after having my baby brother, and dad was taking care of us. It makes me smile thinking about that. Thanks for the memory this morning.

  64. We got a skiff of snow last night but GOD say fit to have MERCY on us at let the temperature up to 64 yesterday. The ground was warm and for the most part the snow didn’t lay except on the mountain tops and behind our trailer/the north side of our big hill. It is so much warmer in her and seems easier to heat since the underpinning is on. GOD is so wonderful and I hope everyone knows it in their life. I’m gonna make some of Granny’s Hot Chocolate this afternoon when I get back from my 40+ mile round trip to one of my doctors. I’m so blessed to be able to go today. I pray continuously thru my day and I love the quiet of my car while I pray. I loved the post last evening with Tipper running the log splitter, you go girl! LOL, if I could get an older version of Matt I’d clone him. Y’all are just the cutest couple. I love how you look so lovingly at one another. I pray for all of you here and for all of the good folks up Wilson Hollow, NC. I love Y’all.

  65. Lord knows I already have too many cook books, but I’d love to have a copy of yours. Actually going to be cold here in north central Florida tomorrow and Wed mornings, so thanks for hot chocolate recipe.

  66. Hi Tipper, I know that first cup of hot chocolate will be wonderful. I surely love the banter between you and Matt. You and the girls always said that Matt was funny and and trickster. I have seen over the time he has retired that his true nature has come out and we all love seeing two people who really care about each other and the family. My husband and I joke around when we are alone but other people never see that side of him. I also love this blog where I read about very interesting people and hear about their experiences. Thank you to all the folks that comment on this blog!

    1. Linda, after 47 years of marriage plus over 2 years of going together, I lost the joy of my life a little over 4 years ago. We were also always teasing one another, I was worse than she was. At her funeral, it was mentioned about me teasing her and her just smiling and giving me her trademark grin. I don’t say this to make anyone mad, but for me, if you can’t laugh and tease one another in your marriage you don’t have much of a marriage.

  67. A nice cup of cocoa sounds good:(. We’re having a warm spell in San Diego, but by the end of the week it should cool down significantly.

  68. My mom used to make “homemade” hot chocolate for her grandkids. Reminds me of her. I will make some today. Cold in Montgomery AL too.

  69. This is the only way I will make hot chocolate, except I add 1/4 tsp. of vanilla and a pinch of salt to mine. I’d love a copy of the cookbook to help me with my deer recipes!

  70. I already have a copy so don’t put my name in the drawing. Maybe someone will win that hasn’t gotten one yet. I enjoyed reading about your hot chocolate. My grandmother made one similar. Sine she is no longer with us, my daughter has picked up this tradition. . Have a great week!

  71. I Would Love To Win The Cookbook. I Love Watching You Cook. It Reminds Me Of My Very Special Aunt Cora Who Passed Away Recently At The Age Of 93. She Was A Great Country Cook. Sausage Gravy,Biscuits,Red Eye Gravy,Ham Or Pork chops,She Made All Kinds Of Homemade Cakes, Pies, Cookies. God Bless You

  72. Not a fan of hot chcolate but I sure am a fan of your family and your videos. Been with you for years and as soon as I see a new video, I am watching it! Thanks for all your wonderful content!!

  73. I made a batch of cocoa mix last week and had my first “fall” cup. It was delicious. I’ll be making a batch of Russian tea mix soon. Stay warm!

  74. We love a good cup of hot chocolate around here. With the snow that we got yesterday, last night and now starting to come down, it will be perfect to have this morning.

  75. That looks very simplistic and easily committed to memory so thanks for the share. This cold dank morning near Mt. Rogers, VA and Grayson Highlands would be a most excellent morning for a hot cup of cocoa. Cocoa also releases “feel good” hormones for the consumer and I’ve talked with psychiatrists who think if you want or hanker for chocolate, indulge yourself for it’s actually good for you emotionally…like I needed a reason to LOVE or drink chocolate…cold weather is a marvelous excuse so I will take advantage of this still affordable drink… here’s to you Tipper, your lovely mother, the rest of your delightful family and to all the Blind Pig family as well for a day of warmth and peaceful delight!!! Did I mention we are under a winter storm watch?

  76. Hi Tipper
I love your articles You write about a lot of things of the way I grew up .
I would love to have a copy of your cookbook. I’m sure there’s lots of recipes l’m familiar with but don’t have the exact recipe.
Thank you so much for all you and your Family do and are doing .

  77. It’s definitely getting to be hot chocolate weather at our house. I went outside before daybreak in a short sleeve thin t-shirt. I would have been okay except for the wind. The forecast is for three days of this and a warmup.

  78. Hello Tipper. Been watching you & family since covid. I love watching when you all do recipes. Would love to win one of your cookbooks. Praying for Mrs. Wilson.

  79. My Mom made it like this so anytime I want hot chocolate I fix it the same way. I’ve tried a lot of pre packaged ones but it’s just not the same. I sometimes add a spoonful of marshmallow cream. Delicious!!! Now I want a cup.

  80. I would be so thankful to receive your cookbook. I have been wanting one and just have not been able to purchase. I love watching Celebrating Appalachia and reading The Blind Pig…. Happy Thanksgiving to you all

  81. My 15 year old daughter loves hot chocolate and I’m sure she is going to love this simple recipe. Thanks for sharing!

  82. Cold temps are moving into Southeast Alabama as well. A taste of what winter will feel like but it will start warming up again. Glad all the hot weather is gone have been enjoying the cooler weather we have been having.

  83. Hello Tipper,
I would love to add your cookbook to my collection. Cold weather is coming this week, stay warm!

  84. We got snow here this morning. About an inch out there. Hot chocolate is probably on the menu this morning.

  85. I will be trying this in our raw milk. I can’t have caffeine so I’m always trying different hot drink recipes.

Tipper, I’ve been thinking about you as it started snowing here yesterday afternoon. We were in the sixties on Friday and we’ve had about two inches so far. Our crews were called out in the middle of the night. We are supposed to be back up in the high sixties by the weekend. I’m not complaining about the snow as I love it!

  86. Tipper, I harvested my first ever cushaw before this cold frost today.. It weighed 12.8 lbs!..cant wait to try it.

  87. Ohhhh how I loved when momma would make us hot cocoa. Every time I see the Hersheys cocoa can in my pantry I think of momma. Once again, simple is so much healthier for us. The old ways of eating & cooking are the best ways. Stay warm. It’s 24 here in Scaly Mountain this morning. Might be nice to win one of your cookbooks. I already have a signed copy but could use as a gift.

  88. So far, the coldest temperatures of the season predicted for us today, night and tomorrow before warming back up. Nighttime temperature in mid 20’s and daytime in the 40’s with a strong wind. It has been a long time since I had hot chocolate. If my wife was still living we would take a daytime trip to come to see you at Granite Falls and buy her your cookbook. I buy a lot of used books, so a book with a bent cover or some writings on it would not matter, after all at my age, I have a lot of scars and scratches on me!

    1. Randy, I just love your comment, …right down to the very last (‘like sippin’ a mug of hot chocolate,…to the very last drop)!
