one daffodil blooming on hill

Sweet; yesterday the thrill
spring’s first daffodil I spied
amidst the rock fall
above the road where days
ago snow’s coverlet
had blanketed the hill.
A tiny thing it was
six inches high at most;
it’s sunshine in the rain
blest the evening chill.
Spring’s first daffodil!

Henry Horton – 3/14/15

Granny and I were surprised by the number of blooming daffodils we saw yesterday as we drove over to Blairsville GA. Not nary a one has bloomed around our houses, but I know it won’t be long before they do.

  1. I’m home recovering from surgery and this morning as I looked out on my front yard, splashes of yellow caught my eyes. I knew exactly what it was but I took a second look, maybe a longer third look to see my little friendly daffodils had popped up and bloomed, giving me a lift and joy, knowing that Spring will soon be here and I will be well and able to get outside and enjoy wonderful Nature. I’ve always loved daffodils and I used to have crocus that would greet me every Spring. I need to buy some more of them because they have all played out. How wonderful that our Heavenly Father gives us beautiful surprises and reminders of His Love and Provision as we travel along Life’s Pathway. I am so thankful that He is with me every step of the way! Tipper, thank you for helping to bring the sunshine into my life. You have brightened up many a day for me and I love you and your precious family.

  2. Dear Tipper,
I just viewed your video about having twins.
How sweet. I am a lot older than you but I think
our children are about the same age.
Walter is 28 now. When he was
born I was 37 and Charles was 46. We still
laugh I didn’t know how I got pregnant.
(I taught middle school and high school
students for years until I retired 4 years ago)
I had the same kind of reproductive problems that you
had wrong with you but my problems
at that time were treatable only with extensive surgery
and I was not courageous enough to have it done. So, we adopted
Parker from Korea. We were very happy and never
wanted another child. I ended up pregnant 7 years later.
I did not know I was pregnant until I was 5 months.
I went into preterm labor as you did only I was carrying
one baby. Very scary. My doctor, Dr. Gonzales, had years of
OB experience and put me on bedrest and medication.
Walter was born on January 6th and weighed 6 lbs 13 oz
at 38 weeks. He is our Old Christmas Baby. He was born at
the local community hospital in Galax, Va. Charles and I decided
that two children were enough and we just like you are happy about
our decision. We are proud of
both our boys and can’t imagine our world without them.
God watches over us and does special things for his people.

God Bless you and your family,
    Kathy Patterson

  3. well call em Easter flowers. Mine is up but hasn’t bloomed out yet. I love seeing them. You know Spring is just around the corner.

  4. Your video last night was so good! Loved seeing the creek and all the delicious food you prepared. The singing and playing was excellent!

  5. HI,
Our daffodils won’t be out here in the Blue Ridge Mountains until April (usually)
My Seddum is starting to sprout out. Maybe, cross your fingers, things will be earlier
    this year.

  6. Always love seeing the daffodils pop up, a sure sign spring is on the horizon! Ours just started blooming about a week ago…at least some of them. We had a bunch in our backyard but I think my dog has decided he needed to mark each one of those and they haven’t made an appearance this year, either that or the squirrels dug up the bulbs lol. Still have quite a few blooming in the front of the house. Love them!

  7. The daffodils are just now beginning to bloom here on the Cumberland Plateau. I look forward to seeing them early each year.

  8. Ours are near – maybe by the middle of next week. When I go down the mountain I see a few blooms in areas about 400 – 500 feet elevation lower than we are. My wife loves them. I think maybe because they are the first to bloom and she likes yellow. I think she feels Spring is near.

  9. Love daffodils! We also call them buttercups. That’s a sure sign Spring is on the way! Enjoyed last night’s video. Getting to add to your garden space is exciting I know. The rest of the video was wonderful also, from the food to the singing and the beautiful sounds of the creek. Thank you for sharing that with us.
    Have a great day everyone!!

    1. My understanding is that both are properly called daffodils but the jonquil is a particular cultivar. Both have 6 petals surrounding a trumpet like center. I have always thought that the ones with the white petals an yellow trumpet are jonquils, but I’ve been wrong many times in my life. 🙁

  10. The first blooms up around our home are the sweet violets and their unnamed, tiny white cousin. They pop up all over the ground under dappled sun. I’m so very happy to welcome their ‘grand opening’ each year and admire their tenacity to grow where ground is not tilled, watered, fertilized, or sprayed. They reproduce abundantly and each year their flower show grows bigger and bigger. Amazing, delicate, tenacious, beautiful and, able to be sugared and eaten if I had the will to pick and destroy their show. What huge blessings to the cold and for our spring fever.

  11. Snow flurries and 26* this morn, in East Central IL. Headed off to a nice park about 45 min away to get a walk in and enjoy some of this cold air (and then run some errands.) I don’t mind these dreary days of winter myself, seems it makes you want hibernate a bit more. And fits in perfect with my retirement, and the red beans I put in the crockpot after their soak last night, for some hot chili this evening by a fire! Need to check on my tulips, they’re on the south side and peek their heads out awfully early some years.

  12. What a sweet poem by Henry Horton! The beautiful picture compliments the poem as well. My neighbor’s farm has daffodils in full bloom all around their fence and along the wood line of their field. They are beautiful! It’s raining here today, so this poem, the lovely picture and thinking about my neighbors daffodils just made the gloomy day a little brighter. Thank you for sharing!

  13. Oh, you two gals have been keeping the roads hot plumb into Georgia I see! I hope you ladies had a splendid and enjoyable trip just riding and looking at the Lord’s beauty. Here in most southern WV (3 miles from Va) daffodils, ferns, tulips and the like are just popping their little stems up still a bit scared and shy of dreadful weather. I can’t blame them. Lol The poem you shared was a good one. I’m glad I took poetry in college so I can correctly read a poem. Give Granny a big hug for me! She’s a gem!!!

  14. Daffodils are up here in SC PA but I haven’t seen the blooms yet. In NE MS the Daffodils bloomed in the middle of Jan. Loved hearing the creek and seeing parts of it. Tipper, I enjoyed last night’s video. Made me hungry seeing my Daddy’s favorite red-eye gravy and my favorite, my Mother’s milk gravy, plus made me remember how absolutely delicious my Mother’s Peach Fried Pies tasted. Your pies were probably healthier because they were baked but oh my goodness, to me you just could not beat the taste of those peach pies Mother fried in an old cast iron skillet. I really enjoyed Katie and Corrie’s singing too!!!

    1. Fry Pies!!!! There is a Amish Bakery close to me (SW PA) that has the best fry pies. Lemon and cherry are my two favorites. But when peaches become available in the summer, she has peach ones. They are so good!

  15. Yes, lots if daffodils here around in the Appalachian foothills of north Georgia. It is being a typical spring, which is to say typically surprising. Seems way too early but surely must be right on time. I had never heard them called buttercups but it fits. We always called them ‘Easter lilies’. Since they have always been planted wherever they appear, they mark old house places. I wonder if there are any at the Walker sister’s cabin in the Smokies? I’ll bet there are.

  16. The daffodils have been coming up for several weeks now in area -Greenville County, SC although some of the nights are still cold enough to have frost. 29 degrees predicted for tonight in Greenville, but it will be more like 26 degrees around my home in the country. I passed by an old abandon home place a few days and happen to notice daffodils coming up in the yard. It reminded me of one of Tipper’s post about old home places and flowers. The lady with the spring I commented about yesterday had a large front yard full of flowers. Her home has now fell in.

  17. I can hardly wait for them around here. Our family calls them March flags, or March flowers. I’ve also heard buttercup used in our family. Thank you for sharing the sweetest things. I’ve always told my children to look for the smallest things in God’s creation. When they were little we would lay on quilts in the yard and look through a magnifying glass. We walk over the purdiest little things daily, unknowingly.

  18. We love the daffodils! Looking forward to seeing the acres of daffodils that will be on display at Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground, Ga. In March. It is amazing and worth visiting.

  19. My sweet wife got her first Daffodils this week. They are just beautiful and the days here are still very cold.

  20. The daffodils are blooming here at our house in Gray Tennessee. My long time friend Betsy told me there are many many varieties of daffodils and that the deer don’t like to eat them. I spent a lot of time talking with her about the deer over the years
And worrying about them eating my tulips. I have switched ( my hankering for) now to daffodils and look forward to Learning of new varieties each year.

So very much enjoy your podcast celebrating Appalachia looking forward to each one with eagerness and now the blind pig and the acorn.
May God bless you through and through!

  21. I love these pretty yellow flowers. A home near me has them planted all over the yard! Mine are within my beds and I have several varieties that bloom at different times. They remind me that Spring is very near.

  22. Adding to your growing ability, that is gonna be a good place. The soil looked so rich and just trying a new place will be exciting. There is something about new that makes us excited. Yesterday’s video was a very interesting one as usual. God Bless
