riddles-from-Appalachia

I’m sharing another riddle from “Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties” by James Still.

“Crooked as a blacksnake, level as a plate,
Forty thousand oxen couldn’t pull it straight.”

The last riddle I shared was from “Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties” by James Still. Most all of you got it. The answer was a thorn, briar, or splinter.

“I went to the woods and I got it,
I brought it home in my hand
Because I couldn’t find it,
The more I looked for it the more I felt it,
And when I found it I threw it away.”

  1. Tipper,
Sounds like a road or creek to me.

When we were able to get a car, one of the first times I remember was going to Graham County to Preacher James’ house. (That was the car I learned to drive in, it was a ’53 Chevy.) That road to Graham County was crooked as a dog’s hine leg, until the Highway Department decided to fix it. It’s still crooked until you get to the Gap where the Lookout is, after that the road is tolerable to Robbinsville.

Daddy and Preacher James built the house near the Lookout. It belonged to I.R. Dawson from Illinois. He took Me and Daddy fishin’ in his Boat on Fontana one time. I thought Dawson was Rich, caused he was an Official at an Aluminum Company up there, and he had a nice motor boat, something we couldn’t afford. Daddy just took us boys to the Nantahala River. We all learned to Fly Fish, but John could put those boys to shame in the Movie “A River Runs through It.”

Ted McLean, my Daddy’s best friend sometimes went with us. He made Flyhooks, and called them Skullbusters. A nice Trout couldn’t resist that thing. He’s been dead for years, but I bet he found Daddy and Mama in Heaven, and they’re probably talking about the big one that got away. …Ken
