plate of food chicken, squash, sweet potato

Our Sunday night supper: baked sweet potato, squash and onions, and baked fried chicken

After a couple of years of hard work the cookbook Jim Casada and I wrote is about to be available to the whole wide world!

I’m beyond excited and Jim is too.

We recently got to see the finished cookbook and are really pleased with how it turned out.

The cookbook has over 200 recipes in it, information regarding traditional Appalachian foodways, stories, and historical photos from Western North Carolina. I’m especially pleased that some of Gid Laney’s photos from Brasstown made the cut. I know Jim is pleased with the photos from Swain County too.

Many of the recipes are simple. One that comes to mind is cooking squash and onion together in butter or bacon grease. Slice them in circles and sauté till desired doneness with preferred seasonings. A super quick way to add a yummy side dish. It’s even better when you can run out to the garden and get a fresh squash still warm from the sunshine.

In the coming weeks I’ll share details about purchasing the book directly from me. It will also be available in a variety of bookstores across the country.

Jim and I are thrilled that Mast General Stores will be selling the book. They’ve also invited us to sign books at several of their locations.

Over the weekend my sister-n-law’s youngest sister and her daughter were killed in a car wreck. They will be sorely missed by many people. Please keep the rest of their family in your prayers. Especially Jaron, Eric, and Eddie. Krissy was 46 and sweet Annie was 15.

Praying the Lord will comfort Krissy’s family and keep His loving arms around them as they go through what has to be the most tragic thing they have ever faced. I lost my parents in a car wreck and I never found words to describe the pain of losing them both so suddenly.

  17. The elements of sweet and bitter come so mixed up and that is life in this world. In that much we are all one but still tragedy strikes us dumb and numb. The older I get the more it seems to me a silent hug has said more than any words. I pray the everlasting arms will take each of the grieving into that peace that passes understanding.

So pleased for and with you and Jim on the imminent debut of y’all’s handiwork after so long a time. That book will be one form of ‘bread on the waters’ and like BP&A will reach far and wide and likely even to generations yet unborn.

Saw your video last night and it’s funny, we paid our mortgage off in Feb and last month paid off my car. My husband said I was obsessed with having no debt. And I was. Now we need to build our “rainy day” fund so we’d have money if something does get “tore up” at the house. I love that expression.

  33. Congratulations, my wife would have loved the cook book. Cook books were one of her favorite things. I will be praying for the family of the ones killed in the car wreck. I had my daughter and wife both taken away in the blink of an eye and it seems to be especially hard when this happens. On a lighter note, for som reason, I dreamed last night about Tipper, Chitter, Chatter and some of the other family members being at my church and singing. I don’t know what happen to Paul and the Deer Hunter. One other thing , I watch a video yesterday about a farmer planting huge amounts of vegetables to sell, he said one of the sure signs that there would not be any more frost was when the pecan trees begin to bud. The pecan tree never lied.

  36. I can’t wait to get the cookbook. So very sad for your inlaw’s family. We worry all the time as parents, but I never think to worry when I’m driving my children anywhere. God bless them.

  37. Smiles for a minute about purchasing your cookbook and frowns about the wreck that took some of your family. Prayers for sure. On another note, the video about the Ramsey way of getting out of debt was great. I did note the Everydollar site and plan to pass that info on to anyone that will listen. I heard about him and his ‘get out of debt’ way of going down that path and it is very a liberating way of life. God Bless

    2 Corinthians 12:9-10

9 But he said to me, “My grace is enough for you. When you are weak, my power is made perfect in you.” So I am very happy to brag about my weaknesses. Then Christ’s power can live in me. 10 For this reason I am happy when I have weaknesses, insults, hard times, sufferings, and all kinds of troubles for Christ. Because when I am weak, then I am truly strong.

  40. Sad to hear this news, as it is when anyone leaves this life. Especially so prematurely. Condolences from central FL.
