gravestone for mother

She walked in beauty thru this world,
From her earliest time as just a girl.

Her sweet grace and purest smile,
Could charm a stranger, without beguile.

Her lilting voice, her charming laughter,
Would thrill each one, who her sought after.

Her grace was real, no fault could find,
Within her heart or either in her mind.

She bore a bunch of children, nine in all,
Was always there when one would fall.

Each child would look and call her blest
And she ne’er chose one above the rest.

Most fortunate and lucky was her mate
For always there, she was, and never late.

Now she’s left this mortal coil behind
She exchanged it for a better kind.

And those so lucky that she showed love
Can sleep in comfort now, for she’s above.

She walked in beauty, life could nae her harden
And now she’s working in the Savior’s garden.

Written for my Mama

—G.W. Newton

I hope you enjoyed G.W.’s poem. He was a faithful reader of the Blind Pig in the early years. G.W. passed away several years back.

Here’s a guest post G.W. wrote about his sweet determined mother: Mama And The Splinters.

  1. A beautiful tribute to G.W.’s mother. He was a wonderful writer to me. I can think those things but not so good writing it down. To all the mother’s out there, may you have the nicest and happiest Mother’s Day ever. You deserve praise and honor for all you do or have done for your children. Of all ages. Being a mother is one of the most difficult jobs but being a mother is an important, rewarding and fulfilling experience. Thank you momma for having been there for me when you were still with us. Having seven children, in itself is remarkable. You were very courageous and talented and could do anything. I’m sorry if I never said these things when you were here. I truly appreciated you and loved you even more. May God be your comforter and keep you in His stead. Thank you Miss Tipper and Happy Mother’s Day to Granny, you, Katie and Corie. Love to all.

  4. Thank you for posting the beautiful poem and I just loved reading about his mama and the splinters too. I am so fortunate to still have my Mama, who is 82 years old, to celebrate Mother’s Day with. She has always been the best mama anyone could ask for. She kept our tummy’s full of her good cooking and baking and our hearts full of her love. She took us to church. She was always at home waiting with warm sugar cookies or some other little snack every day when we got home from school. After dinner and dishes were all cleaned up, she would play badmitten with us in the summer. She would pack us picnic lunches with a jar of kool-aid. I could never count all the things she did for me and my siblings, but I can try to thank her by spending precious time with her—and bringing her a little joy with flowers and candy—and a dinner she doesn’t have to cook. Tipper, I hope you, Granny, and your girls have a wonderful Mother’s Day tomorrow. Happy early Mothers Day to each mom here on the blind pig!

  5. A sweet message for my mother, born in Bluefield, WVa in 1923 and died in Ft Thomas, KY 20 years ago. I’ll be by this weekend to put flowers on her and Dad’s grave.

  6. I want to say all you all were a blessing yesterday with your posts of memories of your grandparents. And I expect today will be that again. You all convince me more and more that selfless love is the greatest treasure there is, ever has been or ever will be. And here is a place that bears witness. To all the Moms, biological or by love’s adoption, God bless you.

  7. Lovely tribute to mothers everywhere. Thank you, Tipper, and G.W., bless your heavenly rest.

  8. A lovely poem and perfect for Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day to you Tipper, your girls and all your readers that are mothers!

  9. This brought tears to my eyes. There is no explaining the blessing of a wonderful mother (and father, too). Such a blessing is a poem written by children their entire lives.

    1. Dear Tipper,
This is one of the most touching poems I’ve ever read! I’m sitting here with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes, remembering my own dear mother who died in May two years ago at almost 103. She was the oldest of 7 and her mother died when she was 18, so she had to stay home for the next 4 yrs helping her father raise the younger 6. Not an easy task! We were blessed to have her live with us for her last 5 years and she was forever grateful for that. I miss her so much, but know how very blessed I was to have had her for such a long time! I don’t know anyone who didn’t love her! Thank you for printing the beautiful poem! God bless you…….Happy Mother’s Day!
      Love, Jackie

  10. To me, a good mother is the heart and soul of a family. Read the verses in the Bible about a virtuous woman. I think many mothers would be considered a virtuous women. After my wife’s death, I now realize this more than ever. This is a day early, but on Mother’s Day I not only think and pray for the mothers but also think of the many ladies that wanted to be a mother but couldn’t be for whatever reason. I have a niece by marriage that can’t have children, now she and her husband foster children.
