solve learning riddles from appalachia

Today I’m sharing a riddle from Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties by James Still.

I found a thing good to eat,
White and smooth and ever so neat,
Neither flesh, nor fish, nor bone,
In three weeks it ran alone.

The last riddle I shared was from a sign I saw at Spud’s Shack in Murphy.

What is greater than God, worse than the devil
A rich man wants for it, a poor man has it
If you eat it you will starve to death?

Many of you guessed the correct answer: nothing.

  1. James Still wrote many stories about Troublesome Creek. Of course they were all great. I grew up on Troublesome Creek and it was the best place in the world to be raised.
