I’m sharing another riddle from Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties by James Still.

Opens like a pocketbook,
Closes with a click,
A tent of black spread in air
On a walking stick.

The last riddle I shared was from Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties by James Still.

Old Dial Thomas built a barn of poplar logs. And would he use iron nails? Now, no. Not by your bowlegged grandpaw he wouldn’t. He said they would draw lightning and set it afire. So maul in hand, he went driving wooden pegs all over the place. But hey-o! Where did he hit the first peg?

Several folks got this one: on the head.

  1. Riddle 50 is an umbrella. But note it has some age. It is from back in the day when umbrellas were both black and opaque. I think the dome-shaped clear ones these days are safer and more usable though. I wonder how many guy readers on BP&A ever owned an umbrella. I never have, mainly I guess because I’ve so much as thought about it.

    1. I have three umbrellas. They were all given to me. My son gave me one and my daughter gave me two. Apparently they worry more about me than I do. I rarely use one of them.

    1. Discover the 20 British slang terms for an umbrella, including “brolly,” “gamp,” and “bumbershoot. “

  2. Is the answer to the riddle an umbrella?
I really enjoyed watching you and your family sledding. Your joy was infectious and almost child like. So glad you got the snow!

  3. I must have missed the previous on because of Helene. I wouldn’t have guessed “on the head” though because wooden pegs don’t have heads. “On the end” would be closer.

  4. I love the riddles, the answer of course is an UMBRELLA! Each day’s post cheers my heart, many thanks!

  5. I think I know this one and have it handy today in the rain. Some of them stump me but this one seems easy. Thanks. These are fun to share.

  6. I’m going to guess umbrella, but the ‘opens like a pocketbook’ is throwing me off. I don’t think of a pocketbook opening like an umbrella. I love to see all the answers to these.

Tipper, I received my egg separator and my grandkids were here when I opened it. The look on their faces was priceless. They asked what I wanted with a thing that looked like that. I told them it serves a purpose, but they had no idea what it could be. (neither did I when you showed yours) We had so much fun with that piece of pottery! I’m sure it will be an interesting conversation with each person who comes along.

The sun has been out and has melted our deep snow down into sheets of ice and it is raining now. We are getting ready for zero degree weather with negative twenties windchill for the next 3 days.

Still praying for all the people hurt by the hurricane. I watch Deep River Farm and John Ward, along with yours, nightly, for info on how to help. God bless all who are involved in helping and all those receiving. May God meet every need!

    1. Debbie, this has nothing to do with your egg separator but with the price of eggs. I just read an article by the Iowa State University that says 100 million egg laying chickens have been destroyed because of the bird flu. The price of eggs is going to sky rocket. It also said free range chickens are more likely to get the flu than chickens raised in confinement because the flu is being spread by wild bird droppings in the areas of the free range chickens.

      1. Randy, that is terrible to hear. We keep a flock of 16 hens and a rooster. One would think confinement would be unhealthy and how if they’re confined they would even get it. We have an open run and a closed run. On late summer days we let them roam for a couple of hours a day, but they easily go back to roost as it gets dusky dark. I waterglass eggs to have them all winter. I hate to hear that about the bird flu. I reckon if it comes here the strong will survive, or none at all. Terrible
