solve learning riddles from appalachia

I’m sharing another riddle from “Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties” by James Still.

Round as an apple, Flat as a plane,
(Hole in my pocket, Beggar again.)

The last riddle I shared was from “Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties” by James Still.

Nobody under the shining courts of heaven has seen it;
It can whistle but can’t talk;
It can make you cry and dry your eye.

A lot of folks got the answer: the wind.

  1. After reading all the other comments I must admit I thought first of a silver dollar, but after careful consideration I concluded that a person would beg for Skoal before they would money. Now ain’t I right?

  2. Hmmm! Round as an apple. Flat as a plane. Hole in my pocket. Hmmmm! Yeah, I think I’ve got it! It’s a can of Skoal, Copenhagen or Grizzly! I don’t know about the beggar part but I still think it’s one of those or similar items (they all look alike in your pocket before the hole wears through). I guess the beggar part is when you run out. “Hey, you got any Skoal on you?” “Naw, all I’ve got is a plug of Bull of the Woods. I’ll cut you off a piece if it’ll get you by.” “Yeah, cut me off a piece, I’ve got to have something.”
    Mild Dental will wear a smaller round hole but it is usually kept in an apron pocket or the bib pocket on your overhauls. Them other wear through because you sit on them a lot.

  3. I believe it’s a coin also. I to have been having problems getting your blog to come up. Yesterday there was not a place to leave a reply. Oh, the world of computers. Have a great day everyone!

  4. I tracked you down, and as they say in Appalachia, “I tracked you down like a dog.” It was not easy because google still shows you, but is dead when you click on it. I will try to follow you using the strange method I came up with. So sorry that this hit you right here at harvest time. 🙁

    1. Instead of going through google (or any search engine), just create a bookmark and use that to link to BP&A.

      Firefox is my browser. I have a bookmark pinned to the bookmarks bar and just click it.

      Let us know if this is any better for you.

  5. It is probably just me, but have had a time pulling up your blog last few days. I finally got this from going to Firefox, and was able to pull up an earlier post, then kept hitting next until it took me to today. My usual morning routine is to read your blog and FB posts from friends each morning. I can get Ebay and all sorts of sites, but not my morning fix of The Blind Pig. I have never used the email, but tried and not showing up through that link either. Baffled! I still am able to get your channel on YouTube.

  6. Wow…I thought Wind, but nah, not so easy and I never thought coin but that was a good answer…thanks, love reading every blog you do…Enjoy today, for no one but God knows about tomorrow.

  7. I’m thinking a coin. Dropped out a hole in the pocket, unbeknownst to the owner until later on that it’s gone…and then one misses it- very frustrating indeed. I always sew pockets when I notice they are torn. It’s saved me a lot of heartache later…

    1. I thought coin too. Sadie many years ago I lost a case pocket knife by having it fall through a unknown about hole in my pants pocket. Still shed a tear every now and then over that.
