I didn’t have a white Christmas but I did get a skiff of snow Monday night.
We didn’t realize it was supposed to snow. The Deer Hunter went out to lock the chickens up and discovered it was snowing and beginning to lay on the ground.
Chatter and Austin have been at our house since Christmas Eve because their water system wasn’t working. The Deer Hunter and Austin got it fixed today.
The Deer Hunter decided we better take at least one vehicle to the bottom of the driveway just in case and they drove Austin’s truck down.
As soon as I heard all the hoopla I ran to the back door to see if I could see any snow. I was hoping for big fluffy flakes, but it was small hard flakes instead.
The truck move turned out to be unnecessary since we only got a skiff of snow, but you never know what will happen during the night.
Even though it was only a small amount of snow I couldn’t wait to get out and look at it closer.
The bitter cold temperatures we’ve had over the last week have returned to normal so the 30 degree weather actually felt warm compared to the single digits we had over Christmas.
Granny always liked snowy scenes even though she didn’t much like to get out in the cold, at least not in my lifetime. One of her favorite pictures hangs in her room—it’s a snowy creek scene.
The skiff of snow was really pretty laying along the partially frozen dark waters of Stamey Creek.
Of course I’m already hoping for another snow, and hoping the next one will be a big snow! Chatter and I made a pact that if we get a big snow before spring of the year we’re going to build a snowman.

It is so funny to me hearing people wish for snow. I live in CNY & get all the snow I can STAND. Its pretty at first (especially on/near xmas) but it sure becomes a pain before too long. the last few years it hasn’t laid on any thick snow until late January & then we sure get it. Then it lingers into April & sometimes even May. We have had snow storms on Mother’s Day several times in my life. This year I have a teen daughter driving 45 minutes every night to school. I am praying for as little snow as possible. I can understand peoples’ fascination with it, if they don’t have it often, though.
We got about the same Tipper. So much sickness going on at our house. I’m the only one so far hadn’t gotten sick. I have been taking care if 3 people. I believe my grandson had the flu and don’t know what my husband had and my daughter. But I sure did enjoy watching it snow.
I really enjoy snow. We very rarely get a big one. I am sure the folks up north would disagree. Bless them they have sure had a rough Christmas in some areas. We still had snow yesterday in shady places. I noticed it was still behind the barn while tending to the chickens. Our pond froze over too but is thawing today.
I am so glad you got a skiff of snow Tipper.
I’m glad you got your wish for some snow! I’m not ready for spring at all, but I’ve had enough snow for the year. My husband is out on the tractor plowing, we got 7 inches today. We’ve had close to 4 feet so far this year and we have 3 snow months to go. It’ll snow in April but usually doesn’t get too wild. Now that the holidays are over I’m ready to hole up in my sewing room and make quilt tops and quilt before I have to start thinking about the garden again. Blessings, TeresaSue.
I remember snows in Raleigh. The deepest accumulation was 24″ some time in the late ’70s. The best snow I recall was in 1960. It snowed a foot or more on the first Wednesday in MARCH ! Another snow followed it on the second Wednesday; about 6″ in that one. Then, on the third Wednesday, it snowed another 5 or 6″. It remained below freezing throughout that period. We went sledding every night. Surprisingly, folks got pretty good at driving in it. I helped at a friend’s service station and must have put dozens of chains on cars and trucks.
Glad you got a skiff anyways. And glad for Austen & Chatter they got the water restored. You may have your best luck for a big snow in March. This ‘cyclone bomb’ overwhelmed the moist Gulf air.
We didn’t see any snow but the pipes burst in my daughter and son-in-law’s condo they rent out. The poor tenants called and said water was pouring out. The hardwood floor my son-in-law put in was ruined in the kitchen and living room. The drywall is ruined in the kitchen and the pipes need replaced. Now today it is 51 degrees. Wish the tenants had known to run a trickle of water through the pipes to keep them from freezing and open the cabinet doors under the sink to let the heat in.
I enjoyed your skiff of snow and your video walking through it.
l’m not familiar with the term “skiff” as an amount. Please elaborate. Thanks.
Ron-you can read more about skiff here: https://blindpigandtheacorn.com/a-skiff-of-snow/ 🙂
Tipper, thank you for the link to the definition of “skiff”. The article and the comments were very helpful.
here in Murphy we did get one night with 0 temps about 6 hours with either 1 or 0. 2 popes froze but no bursting.
watched the video this am. that section of ice with the creek running under it was impressive. Glad you got to make yhe first footprints
Thank you for sharing the skiff of snow with us. It was so pretty, and we especially enjoyed seeing the creek with the ice formations. Love the pictures! You almost had a white Christmas!! Glad Austin and Corie got the water fixed. Have a great day everyone. Stay safe and warm.
I watched your vlog on TV last night and enjoyed your walk through the little bit of snow you had received:) You said stogging and I say traipsing:) I’m past that wanting to see a big snow at Christmas although I had many in the past, but like Granny don’t care for any now. I loved seeing your creek. I’ve been up in the mountains there when they had a big rain in Gatlinburg and my goodness those creeks running down the mountain side of the roads were just a gushing water over the rocks. Beautiful!! I still prefer the little creeks in NE MS where you don’t see rocks, you see sand and beautiful ripples in the sand created by the force of the water flowing through. Creeks anywhere are beautiful and fascinating to me. We have had a 1″ snow but the temp came up and washed it away. Then we had freezing weather and I think now it is starting to warm up and I’m all for the warm up:)
I’m so glad you got snow, even if it was a skiff of it. We didn’t get any snow in my area at all, not even a single flake, but it’s not February yet, so who knows. January and February seem to be when we see snow, if we get any at all. It’s just been to cold to snow here, according to my hubby. We’ve been in the single digits or low teens. One would think that’s perfect for snow but apparently not. Twenties to low thirty with precipitation seems to get us some snow. Ice seems to be what we get most the time and we never want that! I hope Corie and Austin get their water system fixed soon, but I know the one plus out of it was they got to spend Christmas with y’all under the same roof. Now that’s a blessing!
My daughter had Christmas dinner at her house this year and her momma almost didn’t make it. The only way to get to her house is through backroads with one curve after another and very few houses along the way. After I decided not to go, she sent her husband to get me in his big truck. It’s a good thing I didn’t try driving there as I would have been in the ditch within the first mile. We only got a couple inches of snow but the below zero temperature has kept every drop of moisture frozen for nearly a week. It’s only December and I’m already hating winter!
You almost had a white Christmas! Beautiful ❄️! Take care and God bless ❣️
Well now, Tipper, our weather matches yours. We had a skiff of snow as well. I’m old so I keep an eye on the weather websites to see if I have to drive my car to the bottom of the hill. I park it on the side just in case I need to call an ambulance or other emergency services for my husband.
One year we had an ice storm, I think it was February 2000. It laid down so many trees across the roads that it looked like a spilt box of matches. Everyone got out there with the road crews and helped to chainsaw so the roads could be passable.
Tipper, I live in Southwest OH. We got 2″ of snow and it was beautiful. Like alot of folks in the Midwest we had a blizzard roll through. Temperatures will make it up to about 50 degrees this week, in Oh we expect this. Most of our big snows come after Christmas, but it sure was nice to have a white Christmas this year. More times of no snow at Christmas is the usual.
I love the snow too. It’s quieter when it snows and cozy inside the house. Here in Colorado we usually get our fare share, and a variety of temperatures, but not the freezing damp ones others have. I love the way snow gives us a different view of nature. It’s beautiful but you have to be smart and prepared, like taking your truck to the bottom of the drive a full tank of gas, some survival items and use good ole common sense. Enjoy your skiff!
I’m glad you got your snow even if it was a little late for Christmas. We got a little snow a few days before Christmas and with the zero temperatures, it stayed on the ground through Christmas.
Same here…..a poor neighbor’s house burned down on Christmas Day…
Don-I’m so sorry for them!
There has been several house fires and one or two deaths in the fires and two older men froze to death in Anderson, SC. No snow in lower Greenville County, SC but some low temps. It is now beginning to warm back up to above normal temps. After 38 years of driving at all hours of day or night to work, it would not break my heart for it to never snow here again. Many times I would never meet another car in the 17 miles to work.
be thankful it was only a skiff. We only got 2″ but with the snow we got 75 mph wind and -12F temperatures. The snow in the fields all ended up on the driveway in 3′ drifts. The wind chill was -35F so all we did was stay in on day 1. Day 2 the wind was lower so wind chill was only -20 but I had to crank the tractor and spend 2 hours clearing the drifts so we could get out on Christmas. I can’t imagine why the people remain in Buffalo who endure the snowfall year after year.
I do not mind the snow and love the beautiful scenes, but combined with wind makes it miserable. This is the worst we have had in 30 years of Ohio. We have had more snow and lower temperatures in past years since we moved here, but nothing matches this year for a storm. Everyone says this was nothing compared to the blizzard of 1978 when there were 13′ drifts on the major roads.
I guess I still can’t understand the ones who do not keep at least several weeks of canned foods on hand for bad weather. News media was saying people in Buffalo were needing to get out to buy food. It might not be what you want to eat, but when a person gets hungry most anything is good.
Hope you get enough snow for a snowman, and hope it leaves you shortly after it falls and before it gets old.
Harry-so glad you all made it through okay. So sorry for the folks who had more trouble.
We watched your video last night and really enjoyed it. We got about 2 inches of snow up here and had a white Christmas. The temps are suppose to start rising above freezing today, so the snow will melt and be gone and my husband just told me its suppose to be in the high 40’s today. Now that Christmas has come and gone, I’m ready for spring and the garden!
We only got a dusting of snow here on the Cumberland Plateau. I hope you two get to build that snowman.
Like most of the rest of the country, Ohio temperatures plummeted last Thursday evening below zero and the snow storm happened overnight. The wind was intense and we had drifting on our property and the open backroads. The highways and freeways were snow and ice covered too. It made driving a little tough, but we had to go out to babysit our grandson while his mommy and daddy were at the hospital welcoming his new baby brother. Of all days! But, we’re surely blessed.
I always hope for snow, it’s so beautiful! We still have time to get a big snow, and I hope we do!
So, with Tipper hoping and me hoping maybe it will happen. I think most of our big snows come after Christmas.
I was, several years ago, not able to leave our home as we lived on the side of a mountain and going down hill was not doable. Stuck in the house for 12 days, we had 7″ come down….the roads to the level-hard road was only 2 1/2 miles away, but with the twists and turns, nope, not happenin’ . It was pretty, but dangerous if I needed the EMTs or Fire Department. Be safe and warm and well. God Bless
