If you’ve been a Blind Pig reader for a while you know I love to share old newspaper articles written by Harvey Miller.

The 1974 Winter Edition of the Foxfire Magazine contains a compilation of his newspaper articles. At the time of the magazine’s publication Miller’s weekly column had been around for sixty years and was till being published in the Tri-County News located in Spruce Pine, North Carolina.

Here’s some posts that share some of Miller’s articles that were published in the month of April.

I hope you enjoyed a peek into days gone by in Pigeon Roost. Jump over to the Foxfire website and poke around. They are still publishing the magazine and those wonderful Foxfire Books too!

  5. I had to laugh at the 4/29/54 post concerning people had stopped buying coffee because of high prices but some said they would still buy it even if it got to $2 a pound. Here we are 70 years later and we pay between $5-$12 per pound, depending on what brand of coffee you use. We now only drink 1-2 cups per day. Mine has to be decaf, but my husband still drinks regular caffeine coffee, so we found it cheaper to buy the coffee pods in my Keuric. We use one pod per day each. I’m not picky, so I use Great Value Donut Shop brand from Walmart because it’s the cheapest and it does taste good, but my husband still likes McDonalds coffee so I buy their brand pods for him. I can imagine the people from 1954 would be throwing a hissy fit with coffee prices today. I know it sure makes me want too when I go buy it.
Prayers continue for Granny and family.

  6. I’ve had cats bring small snakes in the house a well, usually what I’d call baby snakes. No matter, I don’t care for snakes in my house.

  7. Prayers keep going up to Heaven and blessings keep coming down on you and your beautiful, wonderful family, Tipper! It’s shaping up to be a tremendous year for you-all things considered. I’ll be keeping you all close in heart and good thoughts! No time to Foxfire today… there’s sunshine and so one must “make hay” and seize the day! Books are best for cold and rain unless it’s the Bible and all day is great for that one! May you blessed in all the works of thy hands and May Granny receive a complete healing in the Name Above All Names-Sweet and Blessed Jesus Christ!!! Prayers for your whole family, Tipper! We love you!

  8. I have several of the older Foxfire books and I love them. My husband tore down an over 100 year old house from out in the country and rebuilt it down the street where we live.
We have our antiques there and it still looks like a 100 year old house. It is 2 story and at the top of the stairs is a foyer or small room. I have my books and things I love there like
my sheep and Raggedy Ann and Andy’s.
My collection of Foxfire books are displayed in the house and I look at them often. I also have a reading chair there. It is a good place to pray too. I am praying for Granny, you, Paul and Steve and your family. I am thankful that Matt. Corie and Katie can keep your channel going because it is my very favorite. I have to have my Celebrating Appalachia fix.

  9. I pray that this is a sign that Granny is doing some better and that you will be finding time to resume your daily clarion of hope!

  10. Not so much to do with the first post but Ed’s comment about the word “make.” Just like Ed, I have used and heard this word used by others just like Ed wrote about all of my life. Right now I have got to make up up my bed. I continue to pray for Granny and her family.
