Granny’s Birthday

March 6, 2026

Granny with her grandkids and her oldest son Steve

Granny would have been 86 years old today. I can hardly fathom she’s been gone over a month already.

Back last fall Granny told me she didn’t think she’d make it till Christmas, but she made me promise that I wouldn’t tell any of the others. I didn’t tell them, but Granny did make it to Christmas.

A few days later I tried to cheer her up by reminding her she didn’t think she’d live till the end of December but she did. Granny said her next goal was to make it to her birthday.

Even though I knew she was really sick I figured she’d make it till March 6 and we’d have our usual big party for her. Granny was such a fighter she never gave up until the very end. She was absolutely one of the toughest people I’ve ever known. I’ve come to understand she was tougher than Pap in several ways—that’s something I would have never thought when I was younger, but it’s true.

Even though Granny has gone home to be with the Lord we are still going to have a party.

Paul is going to make her famous Holy Smoke Cake and we’re going to eat some of the green beans she canned last summer. I might even use her pot to cook them in 🙂

I know there’ll be a lot of Granny stories shared as well as a few tears, but there’ll also be good fellowship and good food which is exactly what Granny would want.

I started tracking meaningful dates like birthdays and anniversaries on https://daysince.cc/ after losing my grandmother, and it’s been a comfort to mark those special days. Wishing you and your family a wonderful celebration filled with love, laughter, and plenty of Granny stories.

Continue to celebrate Granny. She was a beautiful, magnificent, and lovely part of each of your lives. I know you can’t help but miss Granny. You always will. I’ve missed Dad for 54 years and Mom for 13. It gets easier with time, but missing them will always be there. Thank God for the memories we have of them, especially if they are good memories because what we keep in our memory is ours unchanged forever. I’m still thinking of and praying for you and your family, Tipper.

  10. Happy Heavenly birthday Granny!!! This is such a great idea to celebrate, think about, and remember Granny. She would love it. I think I may borrow your idea. My daddy would have been 87 next week. He’s been in heaven for a little over a year now. I think my mama would really love it if we had a little party in his honor. Thank you and have a wonderful evening together.

  11. Ammons, I have just read your comment from yesterday concerning your name and snake doctors. When growing up I spent many hours playing and fishing for minnows (horny heads) at the creek on our property. Snake doctors were everywhere, but now I haven’t seen any in years, I wonder what happened to them.

  28. Happy birthday, dear Granny. Happy birthday to you♡ Hugs to you & your family as you gather to celebrate her beautiful life♡

  29. Happy Heavenly Birthday to Granny. I related to her because she and my Mom had a lot in common; my Mom was 2 years older than Granny. She learned to crochet after she was 65 and made afghans for everyone in our family and countless beautiful crocheted dishcloths that so many used for doilies rather than dishcloths because they were so intricate. She had always knitted since she was a child and had made very detailed Christmas stockings for everyone with our names at the top, a fuzzy Angora beard for Santa and a tree full of decorations on each one. She loved to sing and play the piano; I know Granny loved to sing, too. The first birthday without them is the hardest although you never get used to it. You have planned a lovely way to remember her on this birthday. I’m praying for you all this day. Much love from SC, Jane ❤️

  30. Granny looks so small in the photo. As my mother used to say, “She’s no bigger than a cake of soap after a week’s washing.”

  31. She’s having the best celebration ever this year!!
My mom wanted to live to see her first great grand child born. She didn’t make it by a few months, but little Levi was born on her birthday! I couldn’t help but think how she’d love that, but also, maybe, just maybe, she gifted us that day.

  32. Happy birthday to Granny❤️
Isn’t it funny how joy and sadness can coexist? Praying for your tender hearts today❤️

  33. I totally understand! My husband passed 17 years ago and I still make his favorite from scratch German chocolate cake for his birthday.❤️. My eggs get boiled in my mom’s old white enameled pot and my dumplings get made in her dumpling bowl

  34. I have no doubt that Granny will be happy knowing her family still gathers together to celebrate her life while on this earth. It’s also very helpful to share her stories as part of your grieving her departure from this world and you all are keeping her legacy alive.

  35. HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY, GRANNY. You will forever be loved and missed!!!!! My thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with all of you!!!!!

  36. Sounds like a great way to celebrate Granny and I am sure she will be looking over your celebration. Have all of you in my prayers.

  37. Tipper, whether you realize it or not, you and your family are a good example of how Christians “do life.” There is always faith , hope, and love (love being the greatest) that is the glue that sticks family together. Celebrating that love is so strengthening, as you lift one another up, sharing the heartaches and the joys together. Love you guys!

  38. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Granny! What better way to keep her memory alive but with celebrating her for her birthday all together. She wouldn’t want it any other way and would love it!

  39. Your hoping for one more Christmas, one more birthday is so touching. I suspected that was your unstated desire last year and I was so hoping and praying you all could have Christmas. Such a tension, first hoping for more then a yearlong adjustment through the anniversaries and sudden reminders. The missing those gone on never ends but each recall confirms again the blessing of the time we had. I have thought more than once whether the apostles, for the rest of their lives, missed the physical presence of the Lord. I can’t help but believe they did. I hope Granny’s birthday will be a healing time for all of you all.

  40. Happy Birthday to granny as she spends forever in heaven and I’d say that’s better than a birthday or any day here on earth where devil has free roam. I hope your celebration goes well and how could it not with that mayo chocolate cake!!!??? It’s better and goes farther than spoken sweet nothings. I’m putting my chops to good work on that cake! Little time for discussion as I think about that cake! Bless you all and have a good day! It’s a pretty good day when it’s not freezing and I’m sitting with the doors open in VA.

  41. Happy heavenly birthday Granny. I know how hard these firsts are as everyone after is. Love to all of y’all.

  42. God morning Tipper, Matt, Katie, Corie, Austin, Ira, Woody, Paul and Acorns. It is truly a blessed day when we can celebrate a loved one’s Birthday in Heaven. Happy First Heavenly Birthday to Granny Wilson. I keep everyone here and up Wilson Hollow in my prayers. I heard a WOW yesterday that made me think of Granny Wilson, “Don’t waste time, work it to death.” I could just hear her say it somehow. I love y’all. I gotta go tend to my son, he’s having another rough morning.

  43. Happy first birthday in Heaven Granny
My granddad died on Sunday February 19th 1995 on his way home from church–he led the closing prayer that morning….he had prepared a roast and blackberry cobbler for he and grandma (his favorite meat however was bbq ribs) to this day every Feb 19th my aunt and I make sure at our separate homes (unless we happen to be together) we have bbq and if at all possible a blackberry cobbler….31 years seems like just last week –time and our memories play odd tricks with our brains and the concept of time (at least in my head it does)

  44. Happy birthday Granny and what a sweet way to celebrate her birthday! She is definitely pleased and happy!!

  45. Happy Heavenly birthday to your precious mama! I’m sure she will be celebrating with her Jerry and other loved ones. Sharing sweet memories of her with your family and enjoying favorite foods will help your hearts to heal. Blessings and love on this bittersweet day

  46. Thinking of y’all today. As you know the “ firsts” without those we love hurt a lot. Hope you enjoy your time together remembering and nothing wrong with some tears and laughing too.

  47. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Granny! I feel your sadness and joy all the same, Tipper. Momma’s birthday is the end of next month and she would be 80. We will celebrate also, and have her favorite foods, along with her “secret potato salad recipe” that she only shared with me. I’ll look forward to sharing with my daughter. While we’re still grieving Mom, (yesterday made 5 months), we found out that our daughter is expecting and we are so excited! Momma would have been tickled plum pink! Many prayers and hugs sent your way today as you celebrate Granny and surround yourself with all of the beautiful memories and the family.

  48. Thanks for sharing the picture of Granny and her grand kids. First time seeing the boys. You mention them often.

  49. I know today will be tough for you, but I hope you have great memories and feel good about her not being in pain. I know that won’t stop you from missing her, but I sure hope it helps. You have such a strong family and all of you can help one another. I’m sending much love.

  50. I am glad to see that Granny’s family is still carrying on with their family traditions. My wife’s family still carry on with their traditional family “get togethers.” Even though I was an “outlaw” they will still invite me to these “get togethers.” I enjoy it and know this is what their parents would want us to do, but it is not the same without them, no matter how hard we try.

    1. Happy Heavenly birthday Granny Wilson!! Hugs and prayers for all who love her and miss her! ❤️
