Celebrating Granny’s Birthday – Holy Smoke Cake

March 9, 2026

We had a wonderful party in honor of Granny’s birthday. I know she would be happy that we all got together for fellowship, food, and to celebrate her.

Our niece and nephew and their families couldn’t come because they don’t live here, but everyone else came. One of Granny’s cousins was able to come too. She said she’d found herself thinking she needed to call Louzine several times since Granny died. They were very close.

The meal was simple but delicious.

My sister n law made broccoli salad, potato salad, coconut cake, and blueberry muffins.

Corie made a big pot of soupy taters and an apple crisp.

Our nephew, Ben and his wife, Rachel brought deviled eggs and drinks.

I made rolls and pork roast with kraut.

Paul cooked some of Granny’s canned green beans and made her most popular dessert a holy smoke cake. The recipe is at the top of this post. Granny used vanilla pudding instead of butter pecan.

It was all delicious!

There was much laughter, a few tears, and lots of entertainment with the children running and playing.

Often when a family member passes away a new family member arrives. Ben and Rachel found out they are expecting their fourth child shortly after Granny died.

  1. It was so good that most of your family could get together and share memories of Granny. I’m sure she would approve. The Holy Smoke Cake sounds delicious. I especially liked that the recipe came from the
NC Farm Bureau News magazine. It reminded me of my own mother cutting many recipes from that magazine over the years.

  2. Sounds like it was a wonderful birthday celebration! I’m sure Granny was looking on, enjoying seeing you all together. Blessings

  3. I couldn’t read comments in today’s post due to tears in my eyes.

I never met Louzine or any member of the extended Wilson-Pressley family, but the love that today’s post so exemplifies fills my heart. It reminds me of the days of my family – all eleven of us and all their spouses and children.

It proves to me the kinship of mankind.

    God Bless all of you.

  4. Granny would likely agree, any reason for family to get together and have a cake is a good one.
I’m sure she remembered the song from when she was a girl, “If I knew you were coming, I’d-a baked a cake…”

  5. Oh my goodness, Tipper, it sounds like ya all had a wonderful time just exactly like our family when my Grandparents passed and my Parents. The young and the old, laughter and tears and excitement with news of expecting babies. LOVE is my word for families!! God bless ya all and Norman I’m praying for you and your brother.

  6. Tipper, thank you for sharing so many details of your celebration of Granny’s Birthday. I have what might be considered a selfish request. It seems as though Kim’ s broccoli salad is traditional in your family. Would she be willing to share her recipe? Thank you and God Bless your sweet family and Granny’s memory.

  7. I’m putting this recipe on my list of things to try! It sounds delicious. I’ll think of granny when I make it.
Congratulations to Ben & Rachel and prayers for a healthy pregnancy and baby!

  8. What a great party you guys had for Grannie. She was definitely smiling down on you guys. Your family is amazing love your channel watching you brings such joy and calmness to my life. Thank you so much!!!

  9. Sounds like a wonderful time! The little ones running around playing made it even more special. Congratulations to Ben and Rachel. What a blessing!

  10. My mom has made this dessert all my life but she calls it “4 layer dessert.” That is what her mom called it when she was growing up. My mom was from a family of 18 children! She is smack dab in the middle at number nine. No twins and all healthy births except for one miscarriage my grandma suffered between some of her last children. She lived to be 89 and was such a sweet woman. The stories of how much food they had to make to feed the family growing up are so much fun to hear. I’m thinking this dessert was popular with them because it could be easily multiplied to feed many mouths! They also on Sundays hosted many cousins and other relatives for very large family meals. Special times.

It was really special to hear about your celebration in honor of Granny’s birthday. Thank you for sharing all of those details with us! All of the food sounded delicious. It is so exciting that Ben and Rachel are expecting again. Children are such a blessing from the Lord!

  11. Morning everyone. I think Granny would be happy all the way around with her family. What you said about one family member leaves and another one comes or is born. I have always heard that. When we were on the way to the hospital with my first baby, My husband got the call his mom had died. I guess we were driving a little fast, I didn’t notice. A cop stopped us then escorted us most of the way to the hospital. After my son was born, the doctor told me he never had seen a new father cry so much. I had to tell him why. My husband had 6 brothers and sisters so there was a lot of coming and going. Some say the person died to make room for the new baby. I don’t think so. I think the baby was a gift. They give you happiness at a time when everyone is feeling sad. They keep you busy so you don’t dwell too much on your loss. But that’s just my opinion. Anna from Arkansas.

  12. I am so happy yal had a good day. We have been celebrating my mom bday was in august and we still celebrate hers with a dinner and as many of our family that can come. Been 15 years. God bless you all.

  13. Granny would have been tickled pink to see the family together celebrating her birthday and enjoying the green beans she canned. The only thing she wouldn’t have liked would have been the tears. Congratulations, Ben and Rachel!

Norman, I’m praying everything will be okay, and God bless Bennie.

  14. It is a wonderful thing to celebrate our loved ones after they have passed. What is that poem “Death is nothing at all.
    It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.” Our memories will always keep them close.

  17. Good morning, Tipper and Acorns. I’ll try to make Granny’s cake sometime. I saved the recipe card. I enjoyed seeing last evenings video. You all work so hard and love one another so much. It is always a pleasure to “be with you.” I keep everyone here and up Wison Holler in my prayers. I love y’all.

  18. The recipe sounds delicious. I know Granny would love y’all continuing to celebrate as a family and also healing your hearts together too. Maybe next time FaceTime the niece and nephew that couldn’t come during your celebration just to say hi to everyone that could come or just to listen in and be apart of the conversations for a little while before ending the call/video. My family has done that during holidays just so we all could stay connected during those special holidays. Just a thought to share with you since you all have cell phones that usually have that capability on it. Congratulations to Ben and Rachel on the blessing of another child soon to be added to their family. Granny would be over the moon happy! May God continue to bless and grow all your families.

  19. I know Granny would be happy to see everyone getting together to enjoy family and fellowship even beyond her earthly time, and I’m glad you guys had a wonderful time celebrating and remembering–she was undoubtedly smiling down and enjoying it, too! And congrats to Ben & Rachel!!!

  20. We had a beautiful granddaughter born on Friday, March 6, which was the day my daddy passed away 45 years ago. I have a blessing to recall on this very special day. I know she was sent from God that particular day because she was born 3 weeks early. Mama, little Rooney and all the family are just fine, praises to God.

  21. I enjoyed reading about the celebration. I was away visiting some friends in Virginia so I have to catch up on the videos last week. I have missed you all. I know Granny woukd have been happy that you all got together. Please pray for my husband. He is to have a brain MRI next week. He suffers from restless leg syndrome, which has become more intense. Love you all.

  22. I’m glad yall had a splendid get together. It sounds like everybody feasted and fellow shipped! I can’t think of a nicer way to spend a day. It does my heart good seeing you all doing good in spite of such tremendous loss as your beloved mother. I’m sure if we are allowed to see here from heaven, she was delighted and happy to see such a fine party in her birthday honor!!! You are a fine family indeed!!

  23. I am happy to see Tipper’s family are “carrying on” with get togethers, I noticed she mentioned tears and sadness but also happiness when seeing the small children playing and having fun. During my lifetime I have never been to any of my family or my wife’s family “get togethers” when there was nothing but joy and happiness except when it was because of a death. My wife’s family still get together throughout the year, just like in a few weeks with Easter, there is always happiness but now with so many family members now gone on, there is also a degree of sadness too. Maybe watching the youngest children playing is God’s way of bringing some joy and happiness to the older family members when there is sadness from missing those that have passed on.

  24. Oh the party with all the food and fellowship sounds just terrific! And I completely get how entertaining grandchildren running through the house can be…I have six, and they are a blessing beyond measure! Granny will always be close by in your hearts…and between this blog and your channels, she will be with us too. Tell Matt the shed looks great!

  25. I’m going to see another doctor today, please pray I get good results, remember to pray for my brother, thank you and God bless you very much

  26. We’ve made this same recipe for over 30 years and change the pudding for different seasons. We use lemon, or pistachio, during the summer and layer vanilla then chocolate for other times. We cannot find butter pecan here. Coconut is another choice. It’s always licked clean no matter the pudding choice.

Being together is such a blessing!
    God bless y’all!

  27. I’m smiling through the tears! What a wonderful time y’all had together! I truly agree about the little “gifts” from Heaven after a death… every good and perfect thing is from above James 1:17 Hugs to you!
