Farm House – John C. Campbell Folk School
The 50th Fall Festival was held at the Folk School over the weekend. The event is always held on the first weekend of October.
Most years the festival is blessed with good weather, but this year it was rainy both days. Sunday was worse because of heavier rain and because it had rained most of Saturday.
Katie and I went on Saturday and spent the day. The festival is huge and really takes an entire day or even both days to see it all.
There are two stages featuring music and dance. Demonstrators are set up throughout campus to showcase traditional craft and of course there is a ton of vendors selling their beautiful creations and tasty things to eat.
In spite of the rain we had a great time.
The Folk School had Farm House set up as a place for media folks to go and take a break or store their equipment. They even furnished tea, coffee, and some tasty snacks.
We ate our dinner at Farm House and enjoyed every minute of it.
Katie and I have been in the old house many times before, but somehow it was extra special Saturday. Might be because we were alone or might be that the rain made us feel isolated even though we were looking at a field full of cars and seeing people walk around.
Farm House was on the original land donated by the Scroggs family when the Folk School was established in 1925.
Olive Dame Campbell called Farm House home and the first classes were held there.
Katie and I wondered what Olive Dame would have thought of people braving the rain to experience festival offerings.
More than that we wondered what it would have been like to sit on the porch of Farm House in the early years and if we would have seen our family going by on the wagon road that eventually turned into Brasstown Road that we drive today.
I wish the rain had stayed away, but it was still a dandy day that Katie and I will always remember.
