The flowerbed outside the kitchen window needs a good cleaning out. There’s an aggravating weed in it that I know I should eradicate, but instead I’ve mostly averted my eyes so I don’t have to see it.
I have glanced that way enough to notice what I thought was a winter squash vine growing among the flowers and weeds.
Over the weekend Katie showed me it is a watermelon vine with the least watermelon growing on it.
I’m sure it’s a volunteer from one of the melons we ate this summer. I doubt it will have time to grow to full size but I will leave it alone (another excuse not to weed) and see how big it gets.
We did have a good watermelon year for us.
The big garden produced several of the Oh So Sweet variety shared with us by Allen. The watermelons really were oh so sweet. I saved seeds from the biggest one and can’t wait to try them again next year.
The other variety we planted was Moon and Stars. We crossed the plants off as a total loss until Matt found one when he bush-hogged the garden. It was a big one by our standards, although it wasn’t fully ripe. I ate it anyway and saved the seeds from it too.
