solve learning riddles from appalachia

I’m sharing a riddle from Linda Krieger.

You throw away the outside.
You cook the inside.
You eat the outside.
You throw away the inside.
What am I?

The last riddle I shared was from “Way Down Yonder on Troublesome Creek Appalachian Riddles & Rusties” by James Still.

Way down yonder in Honey Gap
I met a gent as red as a cap,
A twig in his hand, a rock in his belly,
Unriddle this one and I’ll shake like jelly.

Several folks got this one: a cherry.

Last night’s video: Watermelon Hill 9.

  1. Lots of people grill the corn in the shuck. That means you

    You cook the outside.
    You throw away the outside.
    You eat the inside.
    You throw away the inside.

  2. Corn on the cob?
Enjoyed last night’s reading. Hope you have a great book signing today. Continued prayers for Miss Cindy and all of you.

  3. I was thinking a peeled, stewed apple, but I believe an ear of corn is more apt to be the correct answer.

  4. I think corn is a good answer. Back when people had mules or cows the shucks would be ate by animals and after drying the cobs would be used in the outhouse. Red ones first and then a white one, some of of you may need to think about this. Unlike in the riddle, nothing was wasted or thrown away. The stalks tied into shocks and the leaves into fodder. Hope everyone has a good day, praying for Miss Cindy and will also pray for Norman’s sister.

  5. LOL…I am totally stumped on this riddle! I can’t wait to hear this answer! The only thing that has come to my mind after reading it several times is an avocado, because you don’t eat the outside, but the inside, but once you eat the meat of it you toss out the seed. Then if that’s the case, it could be a mango, but I doubt it’s either one. I’m just stumped!

I thought the last one might be a Cherry, but really wasn’t for sure until I saw others post it was a Cherry. I really like the riddles, please do more! Thank you for sharing!

  8. The only food, if you can eat it, is corn…husk, kernals, cob, toss the empty cob?…
Bet there is another one, but I can’t think what it would be. Missed yesterdays ‘Watermellon’ but will for sure watch it today. God Bless all you guys…it finally rained yesterday a bit here in upstate Florida…finally.
