Birds of a feather, flock together.
A related one is “a man is known by the company he keeps” . If he keeps company, he must like it & them so be similar himself. So it is fair to expect that is true. Which means he has to prove it false by actions. And that, in turn, is illustrated by the practice in Appalachia of provisionally giving a person the reputation of his or her family until they confirm or deny it by their own actions. I have seen that in church to. The visiting friend or relative of a known person has much of the acceptance of the known person.
If pigs are nasty and smell so bad, why do they taste so good? They eat the most vile things and then we eat them. Isn’t that ironic?
Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas. Also, Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
So true! Mama use to say, “pretty is as pretty does.” I have heard many sayings through the years about who you hang around with, making good choices and remembering who you are.
Gloria, I think in the movie, Forest Gump said his mother told him that. I worked with a man that could talk just like he did in the movie.
I worked for a family owned seed company for 11 years and when this guy came in from being in his pig confinement the smell was so bad I tried to talk to him from across the room the smell was so bad. I’ve never had a good poker face so it was embarrassing. He felt bad about it but didn’t have time to clean up after work and come in before we closed. PU. So that’s a fact.
I’ve also had the bad habit of trusting the wrong people and giving them the benefit of the doubt too many times. It’s difficult to get that lingering scent off, too.

I’ve heard sayings similar to this one, most my life and even repeated them a few times myself.
I like the saying that sends the same message as my favorite: If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.
I definitely picked up what you’re putting down, Tipper and I may add-ain’t it the truth and I will add if you lay with dogs ( or cats) you’ll get fleas! You’re something else, Tipper, and you never run out of topics to discuss! Have a great weekend and try not to get blown away!

I have heard this and similar sayings about who you hang around. My father in law would try to teach and tell his grandchildren if you play/hang around a manure pile long enough you will eventually get some on you. This was just his way of telling them to be careful of who they ran around with.
