paul and pap keeping the music alive

Pap and Paul playing in Gainesville GA

Paul’s still working through old music recordings and videos of Pap. He’s been uploading some of them to our Youtube channel. Thanks to the great folks at Ridgeline TV we have several complete concerts preserved on dvd from performances at the Historic Union County Courthouse in Blairsville GA.

One of the first times we played at the courthouse without Pap a lady came up and told us she’d give anything to hear Pap harmonize with Paul on the old song Until Then one more time in the courtroom. I think nearly every time they did the song there they received a standing ovation for it. Their harmony certainly did shine on that one.

Until Then was written by Stuart Hamblin. He also wrote It is No Secret. Hamblin was a very interesting man you can read more about his life here.

Here’s a video of the song, courtesy of Ridgeline TV.

I took Granny to get her hair done yesterday morning and on the way back she asked me to stop by Pap’s grave for her to check on the flowers. As I helped her get out of the car and walk up to the grave she said “Lord I miss you so Jerry and wish I had you back.” I said “I know I miss him too, but he was ready to go-you know he was a doer and he was tired of not being able to do; of having to get help for every little thing he needed to take care of.” Granny said she knew that was true and she knew he was tired of being in pain all the time. I wish I had thought to remind her of the first line in the song:

My heart can sing when I pause to remember a heartache here is but a stepping stone along the way that’s climbing always upward this troubled world is not my final home.

  1. ohhh this is such a beautiful song….I love it
as I said its music of the angels…sending love to you and big ladybugs up to pap

  2. Paul I noticed some of the older songs on here by Pap (Jerry ) and the others that was singing with him. a lot of very good music from then and now, I listen to all of it over and over. if ever down your all’s way I would like to stop in to visit . like the old day the porch singing in the hill in the summer time. take care and keep the music flowing.

  3. Thanks for sharing this beautiful song and I am so thankful Ridgeline TV is helping you preserve their performances. Pap really knew how to sing those harmonies.

  4. Tipper,
In my other comment, I mentioned RFD instead of Ridgeline TV.
I guess folks can think of lots of things they wish they’d said, but I’m glad the Lord used you to let Pap’s life cross mine. I know you’re entire family is Proud of him. Gentle Souls, like Pap happens once in a Lifetime and I’m glad I got to know him. …Ken

  5. The part of that song I like best is in the second verse.
“And things of earth that cause the heart to tremble,
Remembered there will only bring a smile.”
It’s not a big toothy “say cheese” smile. It’s the subtle little smile that happens when you realize you were never really in any danger. Your worries were for naught.

  6. Tipper,
I was fortunate to be at the Blairsville Courthouse when this was made. You all were good, but when Paul and Pap finished “Until Then”, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. I have listened and watched the videos 1, 2, and 3 by RFD many times and they shore did a good job. I sat on the right side about 8 rows back with a bunch of Florida folks who didn’t even know Chitter and Chatter were twins. But since I knew all of you, I got to tell folks all around me about my Friends. …Ken

  7. That was beautiful. I could feel the song all the way to my feet. We love our Sunday musical moments with your family.

  8. Oh Tipper, that’s a wonderful song. I’m glad you make use of some of those old, but precious, words and melodies. It’s just so good to know that “until then, my heart will go on singing.” Jesus does put a song in our hearts. Bless you all. Eleanor Loos, Columbia Station Ohio

  9. Isn’t it odd that believers can get tired of this life while still feeling blessed? To most people, to say one is tired of life would mean despair and suicidal thoughts instead of anticipation of better things. Our bodies get worn down and worn out and let us down more and more. I told someone last Sunday that I used to know what caused my aches and pains. Now they just are.
Maybe ‘Until Then’ needs another verse to speak to not just when we are called home but until we meet again.

  10. Tipper,
I may have told you before that “Until Then” was at the top of the play list of songs when it was on your blog… my favorite.
I used to sing for my grandmother every time I visited them in Canton. She always ask me to sing “it Is No Secret” by Stuart Hamlin…of course “Whispering Hope” was my Aunts favorite…I always wondered why they always asked me to sing, maybe to keep me occupied! ha This was way back when I was a child and I could hold the melody and remember all the words…
Funny everything “goes around”…I love to listen to my grandchildren sing today…They have wonderful voices so sweet and innocent.
We had to travel a bit yesterday to the foothills to attend visitation/funeral for a friend that passed. Although very hot, it was a beautiful day gazing toward the Smokeys! We mainly listened to a radio station playing old country and gospel music…It Is amazing how songs you really loved and learned in your past, even though not hearing some of them for years, the harmony and words come back to you. I hear this happens to Alzheimer patients! My husband and I both discussed this phenomena and said, “Well, that’s a wonderful thing if one could remember songs they loved!”
Thanks Tipper for all you do and the wonderful family music.

  11. That’s beautiful, Tip. Pap has such a presence in my heart sometime it’s hard for me to realize he is gone. What I mean us, in my heart, Pap is still here!
