The Pressley Girls Some Dark Hollow

The song Some Dark Hollow has been recorded by too many people to count. Everybody from The Grateful Dead to Dwight Yoakam has taken a go at it. And there’s about that many verses for the song as well. Its one of those tunes that fit nicely to just about any lonesome words you choose to sing to it.

I like Mac Wiseman’s version of the song, but I’m pretty partial to the one The Pressley Girls do too.

I’m drawn to the song because of its lonesome melancholy sound. I’m a sucker for that type of song. But I also like it because the deep dark hollers of Appalachia are a balm for my soul.

  2. I believe Jimmie Skinner wrote “Dark Hollow.” I have a recording of it done by him in the late 1940’s.

  3. I was born in a dark Appalachian Holler. There is no place I’d rather be. I’m lying on a bed of moss, listening to a rivulet trickling down through the the rocks interrupted only occasionally by the flutter of wings of an unseen bird. Flashes of sunlight are slipping through the canopy, creating moving splashes on the ground around me. If I’m lucky I’ll spot a blur of silver grey as a tiny creature leaps from treetop to treetop. Shhhh… that’s a cricket trying to tell me the temperature. It’s cool here but I’m not cold. It’s damp but not wet. It’s cozy. I think I’ll take a little nap. Nite Nite!

  4. Tipper,
Chitter does a good job on that song. Parts of it are really up
there, and I kept waiting for
Chatter to blend in, but don’t
think I ever heard it. Enjoyed all
    the musical instruments in the
    background… awesome.
I heard on the TV this morning
that a guy named “Burger” married
a girl named “King”. Bet they
    had a “Whopper” of a wedding…

  5. As soon as I saw the title of this post I thought of the Grateful Dead. Now I’ll have snippets of tunes and (ancient) memories flitting through my mind all day. Hopefully this will distract me from the horribly humid weather we are continuing to “enjoy” here in MA 🙂

  6. I can see why you have a love of the tune. I also like the words. Something special about them. Great singing and music!

  7. Great Job; as usual. Has Blind Pig Gang ever done one of my favorites “On my father’s side” ? I think your tight harmony would work exceptionally well on this great song.
