gloryland-way

The Blind Pig’s 10th birthday is coming up quick. The event has had me thinking back to the first posts I published on the blog. “The Gloryland Way” was among the first videos we filmed for my Pickin and Grinnin in the Kitchen spot back in 2008. The song has had over 21,000 views on youtube. To see why so many folks like it, all you need to do is give it a listen.

J.S. Torbett wrote the song. To read a very interesting article about Torbett’s life and how he wrote the song jump over to this page.

Things I like about the video:

Paul and Pap’s amazing harmony
Pap’s shining tenor voice
Paul’s awesome flat tip picking
How young my nephews Ben and Mark were
The way Paul looks at Pap as though looking at him will make the harmony better
The way Paul nods at Ben asking him if he’d like to take a break
The way Pap lines out the song for Paul-giving him the first few words of the verses
The way Pap looks up on the last verse when he says soon I shall see him in that home above

Hope you enjoyed the video too!

  5. One of their very best renditions.
Every day for ten years–a Herculean task! My hat goes off to you, Tipper.
I wish I ‘d come across Blind Pig & the Acorn earlier than about three or four years ago, when research for a book led me to the site–the specific I was looking into was Appalachian Mountain funerals.

  6. Tipper,
I really enjoyed the song by all the Boys. It’s hard for me to understand how you can write about your Family this way. I miss Pap too. Pap always gave “words of Wisdom” to me.

One time you and Pap was in my Garden and I asked Pap if he thought I should add more stakes to the Green Beans. He said “if I were you, I’d put at least one more stake in between these five that
you got because when they’re ready to pick, they’ll be real heavy.” I did that the very next day! I had them about 18 to 20 feet apart, so I added stakes to where they we only 8 to 10 feet apart. Pap was right, I had so many beans, I gave over 9 bushels away. …Ken

  7. Oh, so beautiful, and makes me remember why my husband was SO excited when he found you all on youtube so many years ago. We sure do miss Pap, but so thankful you all are continuing on and keeping these dear, old hymns and Gospel songs alive. We hope you never change. God bless you all. 🙂

  8. I enjoyed this video so much. I’ve never heard this song but I like it, and the harmony is what made it.

  9. Congratulations on your up coming Anniversary ,I was trying to remember when I ran across the Blind Pig and cannot bring it to the front, but it’s been a while, the song was very well done and your so fortunate to have these videos, and Wow, how fast 10 yrs can click off. The book of James 4:14 (KJV) describes life as a vapour, and the older I get the more it seems that way.
