Pam, Tracy, Angie, Tipper – Graduation at MHS 1988

Somewhere between adolescence and adulthood memory seems to bury many rites of passage. As Chitter and Chatter have grown up, I’ve rediscovered things like: the pure joy of playing in the creek, making mud pies, those hand clapping rhymes like Ms. Mary Mack Mack Mack all dressed in black black black, middle school crushes and more recently high school drama.

When I hear a song from childhood it always make me feel young. Like I’m a little skinny shy girl, instead of a Momma of two teenage daughters.

When I’m outside on a warm summer night hearing the katydids, seeing the lightning bugs, if I close my eyes-I’m immediately taken back to a time of playing hide-n-seek, telling ghost stories, and walking home in the dark to a house lit up with love.

When I meet up with old friends-once we get to talking and reminiscing-it’s like I feel the years flying past at warp speed until we’re left standing there like we’ve never grown up.

Today’s Pickin & Grinnin In the Kitchen Spot features a song written, by Paul, I’ll Be Young.

I hope you enjoyed Paul’s song. Please, leave a comment and tell me what makes you “Be Young”.

Tipper

  1. I forgot to add that my daddy could make anything! He made my Ferris wheel & merry go round. My kindergarten was 3 houses down. Sometimes our recess was spent in my backyard

  2. What makes me feel young? To not look in my mirror! Haha
But seriously, living in my childhood home my daddy built in 1946 makes me feel young. My childhood was the best! Mud pies decorated with clovers on top, playing & talking to baby frogs, spying the location in my backyard that once had a merry go round, Ferris wheel & swings here and there. I can’t forget all the trees I climbed & I can close my eyes I remember exactly which limbs to swallow my my legs around to get to my favorite limb that I sat the longest to look down, watch & listen to mama & daddy talk about the Lord, chores, gardening, deer hunting for daddy & my brothers.
Digging up childhood treasures in my backyard!
That’s just a hint of what makes me feel
    young. ️‍♂️‍♀️

  3. Roaming around in the woods and talking with my friends I grew up with at Flat Creek makes me feel young. Trying to get up off the floor after playing with my grand children makes me feel old! Working with Boy Scouts for 38 years has helped me think you.

That was a good song; I sure enjoyed it.

  4. I just love listening to those guys pickin’ and singin’! Am I hearing you playing bass, too?
So many things take me back to childhood sounds, smells, seeing a child play a game.

  5. What a post-today of all days-took my sweet mom “out on the mountain” from Fort Payne, AL to decorate her mother’s grave for decoration.I hadn’t been since my mom was taking me. Even though our roles were reversed today, the memories came flooding back, and yes, I was young. I took a walk around the block when we got back-stopped by the creek I used to play in & laughed at the sight of the three kids who had taken my place (they thought I was nuts!). All in all, a very deja vu day!

  6. First off let me say I’m so glad I found your blog it fits right in with my love for the past. I am so fortunate to have grown up with a great heritage that I’m so proud of. I love to write about the memories that i hold dear. I love Paul’s song and have enjoyed listening to your family’s music for years. My dad knew your grandpa and talked about him a lot over the years. Dad is gone now. If he were still alive he would have been 107 this year. Hope you and your have a Happy Mothers Day… Susie

  7. Happy Mother’s Day Tipper! I feel yound when I can get out do things I did when I really was young. I do believe you’re as young as you want to be. I agree with the comments about some friends and relatives seeming to be soo much older than I. Have a Blessed Day!

  8. Tipper,
First let me say to Ken, AMEN! No holiday has the tenderness, love, and respect attached to it as does Mother’s Day.
I thoroughly enjoyed Paul’s song! Good guitar playing Paul.
You have a wonderful Mother’s Day Tipper.

  9. I asked my granny about this not long ago…I asked her when you start to feel old? She said you never do…

    1. Tipper,
Thinking back on life and times past makes me feel young at heart. I know you are as young as your mind let’s you be although the body has a way of bringing reality crashing back. I truly love this song Paul wrote I hope he never gives up on writing he has so much talent. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020
      TO ALL AND BE SAFE.

  10. Tipper,
Forgot to mention….Love the picture of you and your (high school) friends..with that sweet smile you will stay young a long, long time….
    Thanks Tipper,
    PS..
I had a friend call to update me after I had missed a high school reunion one time…He said, “B. you wouldn’t have liked it anyway, there was just a bunch of old people there!.” LOL

  11. Tipper,
Love the song…had a little hard time hearing all the words…but the music and harmony was great just the same…
This has happened to me lately, repeatedly..I will happen on someone in the store, restuarant or other place..To my surprise they say my name..I must have a look of astonishment! Then they say “You don’t remember me do you?” I blabber a little and say, “I think so, maybe.” ha They say, “I’m so and so from here or there, usually high school!” I immediatly have to say I do remember, just kidding, caught me offguard! How come they have changed and are so old looking and I knew I hadn’t changed
’cause they recognised me and knew my name?
Here’s the twist…as I am thinking..Am I staying young as they remember me or am I getting so old my memory of the person has faded? ha
Thanks Tipper, Playing games and singing and drawing with my Grandchildren help keep me young! Or at least feeling younger!

After visiting with a childhood friend yesterday, that I’d not seen in 4 years,I thought how she’d aged. After taking time to look in the mirror i realized I could use a face lift myself! Always enjoy Pap and Paul’s singing. Hope u have a nice mother’s day.

  15. Some things that make me young again are seeing my son do some of the same things that I used to do. Not so much the same activities like sports but how he can only share certain feelings about girls or friends with his mom and he doesn’t think he knows my reaction well enough to share his thoughts with me. I was the same way, looking back I’m sure my mom told my dad later on some of my feelings but he kept quiet so as to not make me feel uncomfortable. My son is the same as I was and I wonder if my dad was the same way, that is I wonder how many things he felt he could only share with his mom but not his dad. Male ego I suppose when you are coming of age and are afraid to admit girls are really pretty good company. lol Good post Tipper!

  16. Tipper–I really like Paul’s song and the harmony. As for youthfuness,I refuse to acknowledge that I’m old. However,I did notice at the 50th reunion of my high school class this past fall that almost all of my classmates had gotten old. Reckon I’ll just have to stay young at heart, although after a morning of chasing turkeys in some steep terrain I’m ready for a “restorative” nap (to borrow Don’s term).

  17. It amazes me how young I am and how old the friends and folks I grew up with are soooooo old. I believe it is a feeling you should never lose that makes you feel young. When you and your friends talk about those things it stirs that feeling.

  18. this comment from your post

makes me remember my youth, i could have written exactly this and also what you said about chitter and chatter and mudpies and hand clapping and add dolls and paper dolls. this takes me back but does not make me feel young, it just brings back memories.

  19. Well, first of all I REALLY like Paul’s “I’ll Be Young” – as I knew I would. Fine melody, harmony, and guitar runs – and upbeat, just like it ought to be.
    A little personal anecdote:
Ten or so years back – I’d have been around 50 – I was doing some work in an aluminum plant up in Ohio. Part of my work involves getting measurements of pressure, flow rate, and electrical power out in the field. It’s mostly science, but part art, so I prefer to do it myself. My host was a young woman engineer from the plant. After watching me climbing around on pipes for awhile, she said “I’ll bet this keeps you young, doesn’t it?”
Well, that totally deflated me – I’d never thought of myself as anything other than young. But then I got to realizing that she was probably younger than my two oldest boys.
As you know, Tipper, getting out and rambling around these old hills and mountains that we call home is soul restorative, but it is also really good for me physically. At least it is as long as I can keep from tripping over roots, rocks, and barbed wire fences. When I do, though, it seems to bring on a giggling fit to Miz Susan, and so I reckon it helps keep HER young.
So it does keep me young….as long as I don’t pay too much attention to the mumbling and grumbling of my arthritis;-)
