Granny’s saved okra seed

The Deer Hunter and I planted Granny’s garden last week. I’ve never in my life seen anybody as crazy about the garden as she is. Granny literally radiates joy when she’s planting, harvesting, and preserving.

As she said “Let’s plant a few more greenbeans” for the third time we got tickled at her because we knew there was no where left to plant them. Granny also loves greenbeans more than anyone I’ve ever known. I said “Well there really ain’t anywhere left that’s big enough to put stakes up.” She said “Oh no we don’t need any stakes we’ll just let this patch run where they will and I’ll pick them off the ground.”

Granny is a peculiar person. I guess as the old timers would say she’s quare. Granny is her own person and looks at the world like no one I’ve ever met nor even read about. Growing up those traits weren’t always endearing to her backward easily embarrassed daughter. But as the years have flown by I’ve come to treasure Granny’s quirks and after I had the girls I suddenly saw beyond the oddities to the wonderful mother she has always been.

Happy Mother’s Day Granny – I love you more than you’ll ever know.

  5. Tipper,
Today is my mama’s birthday. She was born on a Mother’s Day in 1913 and at school our teachers told us to appreciate our moms real good cause they were always There for us. I never forgot that! Tomorrow is when we designate Mother’s Day…Happy Mother’s Day to all.

Today is also Donna Lynn’s Birthday, the Best radio gal I know. …Ken

  6. Mama loved the garden, too. She would pick the plants clean of even the tiniest vegetable. I guess hard times teach that. I remember carrying a folding chair into the garden so she could pick the cayenne peppers to make “pepper sauce” when she was in her 80’s. I was going to let them go but she couldn’t stand doing that!

    Miss her every day.

  7. Wise old Granny knows that life is planting a patch of green beans and “letting them run where they will.” We pick them up and go on.

  8. Happy Mother’s Day to Granny and all the mothers reading this. Granny sounds a lot like my mother, the old-timey gardening expert who seldom staked her green beans. I’ll never stop missing her on Mother’s Day and every day.

  9. Yes, I resemble that. I have unplanted ground in my garden and it is haunting me. Makes me feel like I’m forgetting something or leaving something out and the sky will fall in on me.

We embarrass our daughter to but she is about to get over it. Strange that we have to reach middle age or so to truly begin appreciating our parents for the unique people they are. If we grow up ourselves that is.

Wishing all the Moms reading this a blessed Mother’s Day.

  10. A lovely tribute — warmest Mothers Day greetings to the dear woman we Blind Pig devotees love for
    giving us Tipper.

  11. Happy Mother’s Day to your Mama and my ‘quare’ Mama, both called Granny. I didn’t appreciate my mom so much either until I was older and married. Thanks for posting.

  12. Granny is indeed a unique woman and she’s like the energizer bunny, she keeps going no matter, what even when her back hurts and her skin/head itches. I know Granny loves green beans, but that’s in the summer, in the winter she loves crocheting. Granny is the best!

    1. Oh my goodness! A lot of folks called my Mama the energizer bunny too, and someone even gave her one. Mama passed it on to my youngest daughter, who is like the energizer bunny too. Mama passed away a year and a half ago, but I really miss her, and lots of times, when I speak, what I say sounds just like her. Mama kept going until the Lord called her home.
