Granny and Tipper

Granny and Tipper – 1971

I’m thinking of a little lady, she bears her load without a fret
The one who rocked me in my cradle and through the years she loved me yet
The roses on her cheeks have faded and when they pass her on the street
Would break my heart to see them mock her although she may not dress so neat

She was the first to ever love me, the first to hold me to her breast
God bless her cause she is my Mother and she’ll be the last one I’ll forget

Her ways may seem a bit old-fashioned, and some may laugh when passing by
I’m not ashamed to call her mother, my love for her I’ll n’er deny
Each lock of grey tells of her sorrow as day by day she’s growing old
Her tender smile each day grows sweeter, each day she’s closer to God’s fold

She was the first to ever love me, the first to hold me to her breast
God bless her cause she is my Mama and she’ll be the last one I’ll forget

  2. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mamas out there. The song brought tears to my eyes. It’s my second Mother’s Day without Mama, but she’s in a better place without all her arthritis aches and pains, although she never complained. She always had a smile.

  3. I lost my mother is 1975. That is 43 years ago and I still think of her every day. Earlier this year we lost my children’s mother. It was hard on them but worse for me. I trust that she is happier now than she ever was in life but I still have my children to worry about. I’m trying to be both a father and mother to them and I ain’t too good at either. I get a little teary eyed every Mother’s Day but this one has been particularly rough.
There is no happy Mothers Day for those who have lost their own but we shouldn’t deny it to those who still have theirs. So Happy Mothers Day Tipper and Granny!!!

  4. Wishing all the mothers a blessed Mother’s Day. I truly miss my mother and her common sense wisdom. Each year I’ve aged, I respect her and what she stood for more and more. She bore through the adversity of her youth with a smile on her face and in her heart. She had a way about her that made people feel accepted and special for she looked for what was good and special in all. If she’s looking down from heaven, I hope she knows how much I love her and the lessons she taught. Thanks for reminding us, Tipper, of this special day. God bless!

  5. Happy Mother’s Day to you, Tipper!!! Thanks for all the wonderful posts about your own mother, grandmother and your own children. You are a shining example for all of us mothers out here and you are leaving a wonderful legacy for your own children Have a wonderful day!!!

  6. Happy Mother’s Day, Tipper. That is a beautiful picture of your mother and you!! I didn’t have time to respond to yesterday’s post but I know exactly what you meant and the last sentence that you said about your mother, “I love you more than you know,” I said those very words to my mother a few weeks before she had a stroke. She passed away at age 87 and what a joy and light she was to our family. I thought she was so smart when I was young, but it is amazing how much more intelligent they get after you have your children and you realize a lot more than you did before. God blessed me with a wonderful Mother too.

  7. Happy Mother’s Day, Tipper! Enjoy your time today with your sweet Mom and girls. Oh, I was hoping when I got to the end the song would be by Pap and Paul!! NOT that I don’t love the Louvin Brothers, but Pap and Paul always remind us of the Louvin Brothers when we hear them, and we do so love to hear Pap and Paul. I wonder if they ever recorded this song? Anyhow, God bless each and every one of you today!! Give Granny a hug from the Smith family, and tell your girls to give you a hug from us, too!!

  8. Tipper,
That song by the Louvin Brothers made me tear-up a bit. Reminds me of a Prayer I overheard my mama saying one time. (before I started to school) I heard her ask God to let her live until all her children was in their 30’s, so it wouldn’t be so hard on them. Sure enough, at her funeral Frank James, looked down at the front row to all six boys and their wives and said “there is nothing in this world like a Mother.” My oldest Sister-in-law heard me start “snobbin” and comforted me.

I was so glad when Chitter and Paul did the song “If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again”, it brought back wonderful memories. …Ken

  9. Yes, indeed – Happy Mother’s Day to the mothers who read Blindpigandtheacorn….and especially to the Mother who writes what we all read! That part about the world being better off for having you – ditto.

  10. I like that very much and have never heard it. Hope your family with Granny have a fun sweet day. It’s hot one here!!
I’d love to see my Mother and tell her so many things. Not one day goes buy I don’t think “oh, how I’d love to call Mother! When something was wrong, if I could just get to her it was gonna be alright. She died in 1991..
Happy Mothers Day Mother and to all the Pressley family and everyone.

  11. Celebrating the mystic bond between mother and child that passes the ability of words to do more than show one facet at a time.

It has always puzzled me why at the cross Jesus made John his mother Mary’s son even though she had others sons. I’m sure it was the best thing for all concerned though..

  12. God Bless you and all the gang. Hope your Mother’s Day is wonderful. Tell the girls I said to sing you a song. Love you all.
