cool before his time

The Deer Hunter early 90s

I was going through some photos Miss Cindy gave us a good while back and found the one above. I’ve had lots of fun teasing The Deer Hunter about being cool before his time. I said “See you were taking selfies way ahead of the crowd! Why you were hip before there were even cell phones!”

Today is The Deer Hunter’s birthday. Granny is going to make him a Holy Smoke Cake and I’m sure we’ll find a few other ways to let him know how special he is to us all.

When we were first married he worked with a man that was always teasing me about getting another husband. I’d tell him “No I think I’ll keep what I got cause I’ve seen what’s out there.”

All these years later it’s still true: knowing what’s out there reminds me how lucky I am to have found The Deer Hunter in the big mountains of Haywood County and somehow convinced him to come home to Brasstown to live with me forever.

  5. Tipper,
I heard on our Christian Radio Station at Murphy “Cabin by the Side of the Road”, by Ray and Pap. There’s something Special about Brother’s Singing and I think they’re as good as the Louvin Bros. …Ken

  6. Happy Birthday Deer Hunter!
Tipper, I know I know you’ve mentioned Granny’s Holy Smoke Cake for special occasions before this one, but I don’t think you’ve described it…maybe someday? It sure sounds interesting!

  7. Happy Birthday to the Deer Hunter.
I’m sure he feels equally blessed to have found you!

  8. Happy birthday to Matt. I hope you have some fine fixin’s to precede that Holy Smoke cake (either I missed it somewhere along the way or you need to tell your readers what that cake is–this one at least doesn’t know). Maybe there will be a pot of beans seasoned with streaked meat, or a mess of venison cubed steak, cathead biscuits or cornbread, turnip greens or poke sallet, leather britches, a salad of “kilt” lettuce, or who knows what. Having sampled and savored some of your offerings, one thing I know for sure. It will be scrumptious.

  9. Happy Birthday to the Deer Hunter. I would not trade my husband for another man out there either. Good husbands and wives are a blessing to a family. I have never heard of a Holy Smoke Cake but I bet it is going to be a delicious treat for the Deer Hunter.

  10. It’s no wonder you picked The Deer Hunter to marry and be the daddy of your children! Based on what I’ve read on here, he will be married to you forever.
Happy Birthday Deer Hunter! It’s your day, so eat the whole cake if you want to.

  11. He’s in his early 90s? Well, I would have thought early twenties, but I trust you!
I see only one flaw in the picture of your trophy. He looks like he needs to go back to the barber shop and get the other half of his haircut. Maybe the swivel broke on the barber’s chair. Or is that a MULLET. Don’t let your girls see that!

  12. Happy Birthday Deer Hunter! I miss you at TCCC! Hope you have a wonderful day and I’m sure your ladies will make your day special!

  13. Blessed birthday to the Deer Hunter. I expect he counts among his birthday blessings that you thought he was a keeper. (And that you do the reverse on your side to.) I also expect that your girls have learned what to look for in a man from him and their Grandpa. Speaking for myself in regard to our daughter, that idea has always scared me a bit and humbled me to. Bread on the waters.

  14. A wonderful man indeed, and good looking to boot! A big Happy Birthday to the Deer Hunter!
He was, also, the sweetest kid you’ve ever seen. When he was little if someone offered him some candy or cake he would always ask if he could have one for his daddy….and yes, it really was for his daddy!
No mother has ever been prouder of her son!
