“Thinks the sun rises and sets on her/his hind end” is a saying I’ve heard all my life. The saying means the person who thinks the sun sets and rises on their backside is a very spoiled individual.

  1. Similar to an old saying here in the U.K. He/She thinks that the sun shines out of his their backside. Meaning the person is question can do no wrong in their eyes.

  2. I’ve only heard this as someone feeling that way about another person – “thinks the sun rises and sets in that boy of hers” or such. Kind of like thinking someone “hung the moon” – that’s another one I’ve heard often, have you? Kind of a nice image 🙂

  3. My hearings and understandings of the phrase are more like B. Ruth and Ron Stephens: no “hind end” part to it; but, if one is besotted with another, or worships another unquestioningly, they “think the sun rises and sets on” that person; also, if one is quite full of themselves, they “think the sun rises and sets on” themselves.
Highs of 95ish and lows or 74ish forecast for this part of the world, which is rather mild for this time of the year (not! complaining) but we’re already almost 3 inches below usual rainfall for this year and the corn stalks are already browning way too early for a decent (if any) harvest. Only a teaser shower or two mentioned in the forecast but do have a nice breeze. Summer ‘s early this year.

  4. Tipper,
If everyone would follow the rules I was taught in Civics, this World would be better off. “What belongs to you is Yours and what belongs to me is Mine.” I can remember Mrs. Kyker pounding that into us kids in the 9th grade just like it was yesterday. I had some Good Teachers! …Ken

    1. Try telling that to the government. They believe in “What belongs to you is ours and what belongs to me is mine!” Think about it.

  5. I have heard that, but usually seemed to be directed at someone undeserving of the caring. For example a jealous Mother in Law may refer to a DIL in that way if she thinks her son is being hornswoggled. It is a showing of excess adoration which can be a bad thing, but it certainly would build one’s self esteem. The basis of a lot of Psychology is to build self esteem, but Mom never wanted us to be too “swell headed.”

I was often told something similar to what Lee mentioned when I was having a run of bad luck, but mine was more, “It don’t rain on the same back porch all the time.” I could not find this expression online, so it may be unique to a family or region. Anyway, it sometimes helps to put life in perspective.

  6. Tipper,
I’ve never heard the saying used this way…Mostly, “The sun doesn’t rise and set by her way like she thinks it does”…In other words she shouldn’t get her way on everything. There are others…never heard the “hind end” one…LOL
Well, the sun rose here and it is hot, hot, hot and muggy…Guess the Lord decided to wring out all the wet dish-rags and towels, hang in the trees so they will dry out for a few days…Hope he doesn’t forget to bring them back in, for with this heat we will need another sprinkling soon…LOL
Thanks Tipper…have yourself a great weekend!

  7. The core of the sun is 27,000,000°. The sun burns me up all day. I can’t imagine having it up in there all night too. That would entail some really high powered Preparation H, wouldn’t it?

  8. I’ve always heard it used in “she thinks the sun rises and sets in her child/mother/husband.”

  9. Never heard that particular use. The way I heard it was thinking the sun rose and set in someone else like a sweetheart, wife, husband, child, etc. I have not heard anyone say it, or used it myself, in quite a while.

  10. I like that one. !!
Related to, when that same one needs a little karma; “the sun don’t set on same dogs a_ _ everyday.”

  11. The bad thing in this type personality is the World don’t view them this way and they tend to struggle because of it, and most everyone tries to avoid them. And it’s all because of their raising. So who’s to blame ?
