Theres a star spangled banner waving somewhere

Charles Fletcher’s moving post about the meaning behind the fourth of July got me to singing an old song Pap and and Paul do- Thank God for the U.S.A.

I think they learned the song from Jim and Jesse but I’m not positive. Jim and Jesse did have quite a hit with their cut of the song. I assumed they wrote it-I was wrong.

Albert E. Brumley aka Gospel Songwriter Extraordinaire penned the song in the early 1940s.

Thank God for the U.S.A. written by Albert E. Brumley

In a world that is drifting and changing
When the faith of the people is torn
There’s a nation of hope and of freedom
Where the sons of courage are born
It’s the land of the Star Spangle Banner
Tis a nation as fair as the day
Thank God for the land born of freedom
Thank God for the U.S.A.

Thank God for the U.S.A.
Land of the brave and true
Thank God for the true American way
For the stars and the red white and blue

Thank God for the land we love
Life and our liberty
Thank God for the right to be an American
Thank God for the U.S.A.

To our almighty father in heaven
To the One who ranks higher than all
May He lead may He guide us and keep us
By His grace we never shall fall
For the stars and the stripes of Old Glory
Let us humbly earnestly pray
Thank God for the land born of freedom
Thank God for the U.S.A.

Thank God for the U.S.A.
Land of the brave and true
Thank God for the true American way
For the stars and the red white and blue

Thank God for the land we love
Life and our liberty
Thank God for the right to be an American
Thank God for the U.S.A.

I only shared the verses Pap and Paul sing-but you can see the song in it’s entirety here and you can hear what I’ve had going round in my head below. It’s a real toe tapper.

Neat to discover the song was written during the time period that Charles discussed in his guest post. I hope you enjoyed the song!

  1. Dear Ones:
I so much enjoyed the Song The picture of Pap at the top does say a lot. I can’t pick up my guitar without thinking of him.
Please know that we will continue to pray for Pap, and all of you there!
    The Steppingstones.
with love from your brother jim

  2. Got to thinking, the song is very true. The US may not be perfect, but even in difficult times, it’s always had HOPE, and though some seem to try to tear it down occasionally, I believe it always will have HOPE, and I believe that’s because of people who believe and trust in Him.
    Praise and Thank God!!!
    God bless.

  3. Tipper,
The Blind Pig Gang did a nice job
on “Thank God for the USA”.
I love to hear Jim and Jesse sing, they’re a couple of my favorites. From watching a bunch of their videos I get the impression they
didn’t get along as good as they
    should, but sometimes it’s funny.
    Glad Pap is getting better…Ken

  5. That’s a great song. We need more of God’s guidance here. I feel our country is getting too far from Him

  6. I have never heard this song – I loved it. Thanks for sharing it. Pap is still in my prayers; hope he will be a toe tapping very soon.

  7. Thank you for the words to “Thank God for the USA” and thanks to Pap and Paul who reminded us so well of our privileges and responsibilities as citizens as they played and sang so well. I am very thankful that Pap is improving. May prayers continue on his behalf! Happy after the 4th and the remainder of summer!

  8. Good song! I love that picture of Pap with the flag behind him and his guitar in his hands. You know what they say “One picture is worth a thousand words”.
