how does my garden grow june 2017
yonce beanOur garden is lush and beautiful. Everything is thriving and things are beginning to produce. Fresh veggies = the best eating of the year if you ask me.

Our Yonce Beans have been picked once and are almost ready for another go around.

sow true seed garden
Cucumbers and squash are beginning to come in and tomatoes are green and growing. My candyroaster in the backyard may reach you folks in TN before the summer is over-its monstrous! Pumpkins and zucchini are coming along too.

grapes and apples in appalachia
Looks like our grape harvest will be our best ever. Apples are looking good too, although both trees have many brown leaves from the last hard freeze of spring. Hopefully we can do some pruning before next year’s fruit sets.

Hope you’ll tell me how your garden is fairing so far this summer.

  1. Dear Tipper,
I read your blog every day. And sure enjoy it. I wasn’t raised in the mountains. But was raised in the country with 6 siblings.. We had to help in the garden and fields. We were poor but yet we did not know it back then..
What I am writing about is a post someone commented on..Posted by: B. Ruth | June 23, 2017 at 12:01 PM. She said they were separating their day lillies and had a lot. I sure would like to have some of them if she is wanting to give some away..I have a few but not many colors.. I live in South Arkansas.

  2. Looking good. I was thinking today I might try to grow some honesty next year.
    Haven’t grown it for years.

  3. Oh my but your garden is just beautiful. I got a late start as I broke new ground and have done a straw bale garden. Everything is just wonderful so far. I have gotten several yellow squash and zucchini coming on. My peppers are forming and the tomatoes are blooming. All is well on the garden front in Young Harris. Finally got some good rain these past few days 🙂
    Blessed travels for the weekend.

  4. I shore wished I had something to brag about but I ain’t got a thang. I swore I’d have a garden this year or die trying. That was a lie cause I’m still alive (as of this moment). I will try not to comment when you speak of gardening from here on out, lest I lie again.

  5. Those are beautiful Tipper. I’m sure they taste delicious. I’m jealous.
My ptoperty is clay, from red to white so I have to plant flowers in pot. I put out a hot pepper plant and purple herbs and all were almost immediately cut down buy snails or dug up by something at night.
You enjoy all that lovely bounty, it’s reward for hard work. -).

  6. Tipper,
In our trellised raised beds we have planted Rattlesnake beans and Kens beans…We got good mess last week of Rattlesnake Beans and are near time to pick again. Kens Nantahala beans are making and all the vines are looking good. The Kentucky wonders in the big garden aren’t doing so good…It is far away from the house and it is critter heaven…Gypsy peppers are coming in and Giant Marconi as well as the jalapeno. No bell peppers so far…still early…No corn here either, cheaper to buy for us and plentiful! Cucumbers are blooming slowly making their way up the trellises….
We have yellow squash and zucchini, green onions and have been picking a few tomatoes…Okra plants are scarce due to critter invasion…despite hanging shiny pans etc.
My day lilies are putting on a show and are at their peak. Weeds have invaded them however and we need to dig them all and separate and replant. Roy dug 10 varieties clump style to give my brother, when he divides those fans he will have at least a 100 plants…The red hibiscus and mallow are blooming…Bush roses are showing off this year! Especially a single pumpkin colored one behind the raised beds…Old knockouts red are doing ok…pink ones not so much on the driveway!
Looks like a few apples this year…no peaches…muscadines have some fruit…grapes not much! Like near every year…birds are in the blueberries!
We cut back this year…radishes and lettuce are already gone…
I divided my Fennel early spring…now have a nice fluffy row…also divided the giant garlic…whew…replanted some dried some.
    Lots of rain today…
Your garden looks wonderful and productive
    Thanks Tipper
PS….Any Candy roaster that comes over the mountain I’ll welcome with open arms…errr (and mouthes) yummm!

  7. I’m glad your garden is doing so well, about the only thing I’m going to have is tomatoes and potatos. The rabbits and groundhogs have fared well on everything else I had planted. I have never seen so many rabbits, the coyotes should winter well on rabbits fattened on my vegetables.

  8. Tipper,
Your garden makes me Jealous, everything looks so good. My Nantahala Runners came from a friend, Jesse Allen who was married to Myrtle Younce from Nantahala. They had these beans for years and they sure grow well in Appalachia. I think I may be related to the Younce family, at least they were good friends and honest as the day is long. I use to go talk with them both for hours at a time. One time I planted the Nantahala White Runners beside my five rows of Hickory Cane. People blowed at us up on stepladders picking Beans. …Ken

  9. We’re doing fairly well. Planted late because of so much rain. My green beans are beginning to bloom. We have a few tomatoes on and quite a few blooms. Had a few cucumbers from a volunteer plant.

  10. SHUCKS! Tipper, you would find T”HE GARDENS OF EVA” lacking in edibles. But I have many, many kinds of flowers blooming.
Guess that does not help much, when a body is hungry and needs something fresh to cook! But the wandering DEER sure enjoy the blossoms!
Wish we had THE HUNTER living nearby. He could ‘take care’ of the DEER or just scare them away!

  11. Wow! Your photography skills are great. You have captured nice veggies. I have some strawberries developing and the blueberries I was waiting to ripen have been enjoyed by the roaming deer. I also have many plant leaves and etc. missing being devoured by mothers and fawns. Happy gardening!

  12. This has been one of the best garden years here that I have had in the 25 years we have lived here. For whatever reason, bugs have been at low ebb and we have had abundant rain.
We have canned 26 pints and 8 quarts of beans and given away about half that much as well. We are getting several squash and cucumber about every other day. Have just started getting tomatoes this week. Will have corn withon the next week. Potatoes have just about quit and the tops are dying back.
Last night we were under a tornado warning for about thirty minutes and my youngest patch of corn got flattened. I have to straighten it up today.

  13. Dear Tipper, Your garden looks wonderful. I agree the best eating of all is when the fresh vegetables and fruits begin to come in. A big pot of fresh green beans on the stove and a pan of new potatoes – wow, I can’t wait.

  14. I was helping my cousin yesterday picking pole beans putple hull field peas, eggplant and okra. Yum
I have a few herbs that are growing nicely.

  15. I only have an herb garden and it is thriving. Yesterday I made a lovely mint and fennel tea, very tasty!
I also have basil, oregano, chives, rosemary, lavender and lemon thyme. The bronze fennel is the star of the show with the lavender a close second and only second because she’s shorter!
I consult my herb garden for everything I cook these days. Like fresh vegetables, the fresh herbs are far superior!
Now back to your garden. It’s the tomatoes I’m waiting for you always grow these little cream sausage yellow tomatoes and the Cherokee purple. I love both of these and all the others you grow. There is nothing so fine as fresh garden tomatoes.
